did you think Randy was going to fly him over?

I can see it now: "Aston Villa fail in a late bid for (insert name) on deadline day as the bicycle they sent for the player had a flat tire and thus he did not make it in time for his medical"

Remi knows the players he wants, its up to the board to deliver. Hollis trying to justify not spending money because he feels its been wasted, is total bullshit.

No its because lerner has spent the most out of top 4 over the past 10 years according to Hollis.  Clown, he just says whatever has jumbled up in his head

As I previously quoted. I have no idea why Hollis is here. Yes he may be a great Midlands business man, but he has no idea how to run a football club. I'm actually begining to question his business acumen. I mean would you go into a big corporate business knowing there are very limited funds to improve it.

Hollis is a an ex liquidation specialist for kpmg,he is here to "restructure" the business.

His business acumen is to tighten the "ship"...he will get rid of players we dont need/want (already started with senderos and friends)

He will basically shred our spending power, sell off the players he can make money on(watch players like ayew, amavi etc be sold in summer) and downgrade the whole business model to suit life in the lower divisions.

You might think that, but nothing seen so far is backing that up.

I "think" Garde would have liked to have a striker here from Jan 1st

I 'think' that too...i think that he would have liked to have signed half a dozen players that would improve us.............

But we're bottom of the league

As a message board we are so blessed to have so many posters that are so well versed in our actual situation and with the business acumen needed to let the board of Aston Villa know what move thed should make next. Yawn yawn

Fact is, nobody here knows what efforts are being made, nobody here knows how attractive the proposition of playing for Villa in 2016 is to professional sportsmen. Sam Allardyce reportedly had a list of 6- transfer targets for January, I for one am happier that Remi has a better idea of what is needed and won't just settle for any old exotic sounding foreigner.

Our summer spending spree and the fact we signed so many players has been identified as one of the reason the team didn't gel at the beginning of the season (I realise there are many other reasons), I think at most we probably needed 3 players in January, a keeper, a strong midfielder and a striker, Remi seems to be prioritising right back, but I trust him to work with the board to the advantage of Aston Villa, without making us bankrupt. We are in the mire, and chucking a load of money on fees and wages at the problem is not likely to solve it. I'm not saying we should be waving the white flag just yet, but above all else I want my club to survive for the long term future and not have years in further much deeper oblivion.

Just for the record, as the club is effectively owned by one person/family that person that most seem to think has given up on the club is the one that stands to lose the most should our stay in the championship be extended beyond the years of the parachute payments.

i still think we will have 3 new players on Monday.

Would everyone agree that last summer was one of the best for signing players and the optimism that it bought?

Everyone was jizzing their pants because we had signed so many players and spent a load of money.

If you're not buying players that are better than we already have then that's where the problem lies.

In hindsight, of the 13 signed i would say ayew/veretoout/amavi were capable of getting in last years team.

So really, we only made 3 decent signings in the summer.

We are now bottom of the league by some distance. How much more difficult do you think it is to get decent players in???

Just 'getting some players in' is exactly what got us into this mess. Despite all the conspiracy theorists on here I think remi is being backed for whatever he wants....and he wants the right players.  We will probably will have to wait until the last day of the window, thats if we manage to somehow persuade good enough players to come.

Conspiracy theorists? Have you paid any attention to Aston Villa and how Lerner has run the club in recent years. I think your opinion that Garde is being backed for whoever he wants is the sort held by men with tinfoil on their head.

1. Fact is, nobody here knows what efforts are being made, nobody here knows how attractive the proposition of playing for Villa in 2016 is to professional sportsmen. We are in the mire, and chucking a load of money on fees and wages at the problem is not likely to solve it. I'm not saying we should be waving the white flag just yet, but above all else 4. I want my club to survive for the long term future and not have years in further much deeper oblivion.

5. Just for the record, as the club is effectively owned by one person/family that person that most seem to think has given up on the club is the one that stands to lose the most should our stay in the championship be extended beyond the years of the parachute payments.

1. It's true that nobody knows what efforts are being made. It's probably even more true that we know less about Sunderland and Big Sam's list. How do we know how many names were on Remi's list? We don't, so it's a kind of strawman argument to say we're being smarter than Sunderland in our approach. It can also be true that an "exotic sounding foreigner" can also be a good player btw.

2. Our "spending spree" amounted to little more than we received in sales, so it can be argued that a poor team from last season was barely improved at all. Problem is, the teams around us all improved to a greater degree compared to us. The team gelling is debatable, as it seems to me that the older guard are the ones letting the side down, especially whilst Ayew and Veretout were getting up to speed. Guzan, Gabby, Grealish, Sinclair had plenty of gametime yet delivered very little in the was of quality or end product earlier in the season. No coincidence that they're not playing much now.

3. We don't know this. The fact that Debuchy has been linked strongly doesn't mean that a RB is his priority. As others have mentioned before, it is possible to be looking at multiple players at once. It's just that some may be more attainable than others.

4. There's a middle ground. We're still a PL club. We can afford to bring in a competent striker to show there's a bit of fight left in the club without bankrupting the joint. Surely the club owe this to the fans that have pre paid for the rest of the season? Do they get a refund if the board decide to give up now?

5. I like classic cars and have bought a few over the last 5 years. I know that if I don't have the stomach to invest in what could be a money pit, I need to keep my nose out of the Autotrader.
