May is apparently under pressure to firm action about the spy poisoning.

At this point I think she'd be under pressure to successfully make a cup of tea.

I'm sure Putin is quaking in his jack boots.

Indeed: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/03/11/tories-will-not-return-820000-russia-linked-donations-philip/

“The Conservative Party will not hand back £820,000 in donations from Russian oligarchs and their associates, the Chancellor has said, because it would be wrong to “tar them with Putin’s brush”.

Yes, it must really be a torment for the tories to consider whether to sacrifice self declared principle and honour or cold hard cash. If only there were some sort of precedent, or previous behaviour on which to assess their moral fortitu......oh.

To be clear, I was talking about the diplomatic response, rather than the party financing issue.

Ah, I see. I misunderstood. In that case, yes, Yes, it must really be a torment for the tories to consider whether to stand up for diplomatic principle or whether to allow Boris Johnson to carry on doing his thing as Foreign Secretary. If only there were some sort of precedent, or previous behaviour on which to assess his moral fortitu......oh.

Something collective with our bestr friends in Yurp* and the US*.

Hit Putin and his supporters in the pocket. Bigly. That's the reason they do all this murdering and stuff - to maintain their positions and thus continue their monumentally crooked racket.

*yes I know we've spent that last 4 years distancing ourselves from our friends and cosying up to an Orange turd, but still...

Free School Meal Eligibility Cuts Go Ahead In England After Tory And DUP MPs Vote For Universal Credit Changes

Charities claim up to a million youngsters will lose out

Tory and DUP MPs have voted for controversial cuts to free school meals in England – despite protecting Northern Ireland from similar curbs.

Labour staged a last-gasp bid to block the changes to universal credit benefit thresholds, but was defeated by 312 votes to 254.

Crucially, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) - which is propping up Theresa May’s government - backed the Government.

Nine DUP MPs sided with 302 Conservatives.

In a rare English-only breakdown of the vote, the Commons deputy speaker revealed the Labour move was defeated by 282 to 214 votes.

Charities and other campaigners claim that the welfare reforms mean that up to a million children will be denied eligibility for free lunches.

Labour points out that the cuts planned for England stand in sharp contrast to the situation in Northern Ireland, where children of the “working poor” will get stronger protection.

It was fun yesterday seeing them crow over how well the economy was doing versus the predictions, carefully forgetting to note that the predictions were that things were going to be completely utterly shit, and the results simply showed that things were very very shit.

FactCheck verdict

There’s some respectable maths behind Labour’s claim that a million children will lose out on free school meals after the government introduces a means test.

But they haven’t mentioned two key points:

No one who is currently eligible for free school meals under Universal Credit will lose their entitlement.

In fact, under Universal Credit, 50,000 more children will receive school meals by 2022 than would have done under the previous benefits system.

In fact, under Universal Credit, 50,000 more children will receive school meals by 2022 than would have done under the previous benefits system.

Am I missing something in this FactCheck?  It seems to state:

"While the government have been rolling out the new benefit system, they’ve relaxed the eligibility rules so that all families receiving Universal Credit have been entitled to free school meals, regardless of income or hours worked."

...and then...

"No one who is currently eligible for free school meals under Universal Credit will lose their entitlement."

So, presumably, everyone receiving Universal Credit will still receive free school meals, as they're currently entitled to them?

But then...

"In July 2017, junior education minister, Robert Goodwill, said “As an interim measure, all pupils whose parents are in receipt of UC [Universal Credit] are currently entitled to FSM [free school meals].” The key word here is “interim.”"

So how can that be an interim measure if everything is to continue as it has been doing and everyone on 'UC' will be eligible for a free school meal?  Further, where does the 50,000 more children getting free school meals in 2022 come into it?  How can they know?
