As a non Tory I want Truss to win. For reasons stated by @chrisp65. I will take the skip fire.

Even if it's four years of skip fire? The country might never fully recover.

Of the two it has to be Sunak. Has to be. The alternative is f**king horrendous.

The long term benefits of Truss coming in and actually losing the next election (hopefully) would far outweigh the short term pain.

Rishi might be more competent, but we're set for more and more misery under the Tories with him

Both choices are horrendous. Given half a chance Rishi will be hacking state funding back to further increase inequalities and chucking the levelling up agenda in a skip.

Truss may be mercifully quicker as she is surely unelectable for the wider British public. Surely.

It will be much less than four years, the very last date a General Election can be called is 17th December 2024, the election must be within 25 days of that date.

It will not go past the autumn as no party is insane enough to hold a General Election campaign over Xmas

The latest it will be is October 2024 and that in itself is a sign of how bad the Tories are doing.

So pretty much 2 years Max

Does the GE not automatically revert to May unless parliament votes to take it early or at another time?

Don’t think there’s anything in law that requires a May election. It’s just been the norm for a while

No, since this government repealed the FTPA we have reverted to the previous rules. When to call an election is at the whim of the govt. They have 5 years from the date of the last general election to call it and it must be within 25 days of that date

There was under the FTPA the dates for elections were semi-set in stone unless a super majority of MPs overturned that in Parliament. So if an election was 5th May the next election would have been whatever the Thursday closest to 5th May was 5 years hence.

That’s not relevant anymore though right?

Edit: and May was just an accidental consequence of the law being brought in after a May election? No specific reason for it to be in May?

It's like the South Park episode. Choose between a giant douche and a Turd Sandwich.

Not for the Tory members it isn’t. It’s a choice between Maggie reincarnated and that brown chap whose good with numbers

Dominic Cummings states Bozza wants Truss in, so that she will reliably blow up and he can sweep back into power. I wouldn't put it past the Tory members to vote him in again, maybe it gets so bad his MPs put him back on the ballot? DC probably talking shite, but it all sounds plausible given Bozza's character and his little hasta la vista exit.

Both horrendous for the country! One is a rich snob, who will complety shaft us, the other will probably get lost trying to get out the door to number 10!

Apparently 2000 Tory members have already signed a petition demanding he be put on the ballot paper
