I’ll reserve judgement until the designs are leaked but can’t help but feel a bit ‘meh’ about it all. We could made a real statement with it but it’ll just be a round badge with a lion in it.

Hoping to be pleasantly surprised but I’m not holding my breath.

The gas lamp crest will be the one that doesn't make the vote.

The lion on its own will be the best option

The circle badge will win the vote

I think we were always going to go back to a circle type badge, it’ll be a mix of the old badge but modernised.

It will be the best option and will win the vote.

For me the only unknown will be whether the star will be on it or not. I hope it is but not a deal breaker but I’ll be surprised if anything but a circle badge happens.

So long as the crest isn't crap. It seems like 'round' is more important than 'contains a lion' or 'the words Aston Villa'. I agree it'll be hard to beat a round option. I just hope it's not at the expense of much better versions.

Found a little more time to make some more adjustments to this concept.

After reading the @NurembergVillan post I decided to remove the star, I've also flattened the diamond out a little and changed the font-face.

I've also just knocked up a few graphics to better present the idea, which I've thrown up on Behance https://www.behance.net/gallery/147539317/Aston-Villa-Crest-Redesign-Concept for the people who like that sort of thing. I'll post the images below for those who don't.

Think I'm going to leave at that, should probably get some work done at some point... but because I love you all, here's a few more bits I did playing around.

It's not perfect but this is still my favourite.

I'd remove the bar from the A to centralise the Lion and the 1874 but other than that, this is the badge I want.

id argue removing AVFC would be the biggest thing there!

im interested in that one, the gas light inspired one i cant picture im not imaginative anough but my first thought was would outsiders firstly know what the shape is supposed to be and secondly care enough to go find out the story and my guess would be no, the 82 inspired round badge is the least risk low hanging fruit

Couldn't care less about outsiders. We should pick the crest that best represents our base, if others don't get it, **** em.

I understand our CEO, being a super duper modern businessman who knows all the buzzwords, will feel differently, as he will just see the crest as our "brand logo".

It's so much more than that, and we should definitely be thinking of it as much more than that. I wouldn't even put myself in the shoes of someone outside the club looking at it. They're not the ones who'll have to live with it and see it emblazoned everywhere, we are.

But what is a real statement for a badge.  Getting it too complex and it doesn’t work across so many forms it requires.  Make it too modern and it doesn’t represent the club and will look more of a marketing gimmick than part of the club and too old fashioned, it would look dated.

It needs to be something that worked across many forms required, to be reasonably simple, represents the club but effective.  It really doesn’t give much scope to work with and I can’t see how it would ever make a statement of intent really.

We just need it not to be shit and that the majority of fans like it or don’t loathe it.

not quite, you rebrand the product (sigh) in an attempt at growth, of course it has to be eye catching to outsiders

you don't change the badge and overhaul all our marketing and products to keep the season ticket fans happy, changing it to something that only pre existing villa fans understand what it actually is doesnt make sense

I just think it was always going to be a circle badge with a lion and ‘Aston Villa’ inside it, the rest was up to designers re getting the colours right for marketing, getting the font right blah blah blah.  So many circle badges out there, just think we were always going towards that.

Yeah in general I agree, I just hope it isn't generic.

I'm all for modern and simple as long as the execution is done correctly.

Colour balance, font and lion etc.

Would love the option to vote between all three, as I don’t think the gas lamp one will be an option in the final two.

I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t realise that our first ever badge had the lion facing the right, which option three is a nod to. This will almost certainly be what I vote for, unless the gas lamp makes the final cut and blows me away.

I don’t mind if it informs the shape but I’d never even heard of this gas lamp link to Villa until a month or so ago.

I'm not " that old " but even I know about this.

Think we even have a podcast or site name " Under a Gaslit lamp " etc.

I don't claim to be an expert on our oldest history either to be fair.

It's probably something we need to move on from anyway, this is a new era.

yeah I googled it, I knew all about the Wesleyan Chapel and the brown and blue tiles in the pub and so on, just that detail has never come up for me since I started following in the early 90s. I guess I’m just curious whether it’s a newly creating bit of nostalgia or one that’s fallen out of favour and come back again.

I think it being round will cloud people's judgement on which is actually the best badge.

Obviously that's a complete guess by me, but that's what I feel like will happen. The lion on it's own will be better but the round one will win

Nobody is coming to games or choosing to support Villa because they understand our badge. Nobody's putting money in the club coffers because they understand our badge.

It's a lion and a star and AVFC in a shield at the moment. No "outsiders" have complained that they don't understand it. It's the preexisting fans of the club who don't like the badge and are driving this change - er go it needs to work for us fans. We're the ones who care.

I don't have a **** clue why Everton have a round tower on their badge, but it looks fine to me. It's part of their identity for some reason, can only assume it's a local landmark, but it doesn't need to make sense to me. And it would not make me any more interested in the club to know what it means.

Same goes for the Manchester devil, the Crystal Palace eagle, the Newcastle seahorse (or whatever tf it is), the Brentford bee etc.

I could give two shits, just like their fans could give two shits about us, and I can guarantee you neutrals don't really care - unless you count my graphic designer friend who doesn't have a Prem club but came to Villa Park to see us beat Brighton in our first season back and now has a magnet with our current 'shoddy' crest on his fridge.

In which case, if the average neutral (or even those with an eye for design) don't hate it, why are we bothering?

For us fans. Obviously.

The above reminds me, that Everton’s third kit (the yellow one) their club badge is just a blue silhouette of the tower.

And last night, it only just dawned on me that Leicester’s badge on their shirt is a different colour to how it is on line or wherever.

I guess there will be other examples, maybe even a past Villa one I’m forgetting.

Just made me wonder how differently presented the badge could be displayed, depending on the format.

I would have liked something like the one on the left personally but appreciate it's a bit out there.  I hope they make the lion really aggressive looking though and better than my current AVFC lion head stuck on the czech republic lion torso.

I think they're probably trying hard not to lie. A little bit like when we removed 'Prepared' from the crest when it went beyond ironic and farcical.

In keeping with this, fully expect the lion to look as follows:
