mjmooney Posted June 12, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted June 12, 2014 To be fair I don't watch GoT because the little I have seen it appears to be aimed squarely at virgin teenage boys - a fantasy world with swords, fighting and sex scenes. The Hobbit, but with titties. It's a nasty step backwards imo. Thank you. Exactly how I feel about it.

The similarities between Game of Thrones and The Hobbit are very few indeed. Perhaps there is a tad too much gratuitous nudity and gore on occasion, but I think the majority of viewers would still watch the show if it was toned down a bit. GoT is dark fantasy but steeped in medieval history. I'm afraid that back in those days it was a man's world and murder, rape and pillaging ran rife. GoT has plenty of strong female characters to balance it out. If you don't like it then don't watch it by all means, but since it's trying to combine elements of fantasy with medieval history it'd be a bit silly if they didn't have all the bloody violence synonymous with that period. Eames
I think there is a strong debate to had about how the TV show consistently drops the ball in regards to the portrayal of women and the use of gratuitous nudity and violence. HBO often resort to the lowest common denominator in order to keep the viewers interested. Some of the use of nudity has solely been to keep the pervy teens happy and the gargantuanly misjudged rape scene on this Season do the show no favours at all. However To an extent Ginko is right that to say its adolescent titillation misses the really detailed character and world building as well as a gripping and complex story of politics and intrigue. However as much as I like the show (and I really do) it is not a patch on the novels.

Popular Post Stevo985 Posted June 13, 2014 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted June 13, 2014 (edited) The assumption that Game of Thrones is for "nerds" or "geeks" pisses me off. Regarding rape (of which there isn't much in GoT) I'd have a problem with it if it was glorified in any way. But it's not. What little of it there is is depicted as evil. It's true that the show does seem to drop in token nudity (male and female these days) and token gore just to tick a box. it's been one of my problems with the latest season. But focusing on that and how "oh it's set in a world that isn't real, it must be for geeks" is missing the point of the show. It's much much deeper than that. Dismissing the show, imo, because you see a pair of tits every now and then is just finding an excuse not to like it. There's plenty of tits, sexism, homophobia, rape etc in The Wire and The Sopranos and Breaking Bad and True Detective and shows like that. But they're still incredible TV. And I'd say in terms of sexism, Game of Thrones is one of the least offensive in that manner. Some of the most powerful and important characters in the show are females. Compare that with the Sopranos, for example, where the depiction of women is pretty **** poor (not that I mind, because it fits in with the plot and the way they would be treated in that scenario) Depicting something isn't bad. Glorifying it would be. If TV wasn't allowed to push the boundaries like that sometimes we'd be stuck watching the brady bunch with a toiletless bathroom. The show is about a different world set in a dark age/medieval period where it's a pretty terrible place to live. Depicting the world in that way is part of the show. It doesn't glorify it, it rightly shows it as a **** up place that you'd never want to live in. The whole crusade against Game of Thrones just stinks to me of "everybody loves this so I'm going to hate it". That's not saying you can't not like it. That's absurd, of course not every one will like it. But some of the reasons being banded about, people saying it's geeky or for teenagers strikes me as the reasons of people who haven't actually watched the show. My final word is: The Walking Dead is **** rubbish. Edited June 13, 2014 by Stevo985

Designer1 Posted June 13, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted June 13, 2014 Totally agree with Stevo's post especially this bit... The assumption that Game of Thrones is for "nerds" or "geeks" pisses me off. Absolutely ridiculous and lazy assumption.

Stevo985 Posted June 13, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted June 13, 2014 I can genuinely only think of one "rape" scene from Game of Thrones. The posts on the previous page make it sound as if every episode is full of them. And that scene was incredibly shocking, as it was meant to be. It was supposed to be depicted as sickening and evil and that's exactly as it came across.
