But if he loses, which he will, won't he be in a world of financial pain even beyond his current situation?

He won’t lose because he won’t go through with it.
Big fundraising push, lots of chat. Pulls out of proceedings at the 11th hour, pockets cash.

Grifters gonna grift.

Today marks the day when the first Capitol rioter\looter\fascist will be sentenced. It'll set a precedent for many of the cases to come. Here's to a long, hard prison sentence with extra slippery soap.

The agreement in the law community seems to be that sentencing for the "low-end" felonies should lie at around 18 months, while the guys who got in and attacked police will be looking at 10+ years.

Oh look.

Two comments worth adding:

Being sentenced to something and facing a sentence of up to x years is not the same comparison (I believe the first guy was also ‘facing a sentence of up to 20 years’ before he received 8 months wasn’t he?).

Also, unless you know the history of each case and the circumstances presented to the court it’s not going to be possible to second guess the judgement received (when it is finally handed down to the second case).

It's also worth mentioning that the lawyer of said amoeba argued for total release and that the captive wouldn't cope in prison. 8 months, albeit extremely lenient, will be horror for someone who hates anything with colour amongst men who care deeply about American democracy and have had their votes suppressed for decades. Also, many of these idiots have been in prison for over 6 months already.

8 months seems to have been about in the middle of the expected range in terms of leniency/strictness; I think I read that the recent average for obstruction cases (obviously not to do with Jan 6th, as he's the first) is 6 months or so?

The way it works is that sentences get enhancements or mitigations. This guy had several of both; there was an enhancement for entering the Senate chamber, and I think there may have been one due to him carrying a rope and other equipment as well. On the other side, there were also some mitigations - he didn't break or steal anything when he was in there, he wasn't violent, and above all he was the first to plead guilty.

During the sentencing, the judge was at pains to say that he was sentencing *this* defendant, not other ones, and so I don't think it is safe to assume that all of the hundreds of participants - and in particular those who were violent and/or members of militias - will be getting similar sentences.

Thomas Barrack, Trump Fund-Raiser, Indicted on Lobbying Charge

Mr. Barrack, who served as chairman of Donald Trump’s inaugural committee, was accused in the Eastern District of New York of failing to register as a lobbyist for the United Arab Emirates.

Thomas J. Barrack Jr., a close friend of former President Donald J. Trump and one of his top 2016 campaign fund-raisers, was indicted on Tuesday morning on federal charges of violating a federal law requiring lobbyists for foreign interests to disclose their work to the Justice Department.

Federal prosecutors and the F.B.I. have been investigating Mr. Barrack for nearly three years, focusing on whether he tried to sway Mr. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign or his administration on behalf of Persian Gulf nations with huge stakes in United States policy.

It's astonishing how many of Trump's past friends and allies have been revealed to be either colluding with or working for foreign governments. You don't really need to do a qanon connect the dots thing here to realise that Trump has pretty much been played by half the world's governments due to his stupidity and recklessness.
