Kingman
From my understanding we can still negotiate a deal with him before June 30th and that he isn't "released" in that sense. After that date he is released and can sign on a free transfer to another club. It's looking likely he will move on anyway Can he not leave to go abroad? El-Reacho
He's pretty vulnerable right now - especially with his injury record. If he gets injured he could be left high and dry. Whenever he gets a knock it always takes weeks or months longer than initially anticipated for him to come back. He's playing a similar high risk strategy to Rod Tidwell and Jerry Maguire - ultimately that paid off for Rod.
flatty
Whilst it's always a shame to lose a good player on a free transfer I actually think it may turn out well for us. Defensively we have been pretty poor for some time, we lack a consistent pairing that forges a solid defence over time and although I do rate Vlaar, his injury proneness and seemingly extended recovery periods really don't help us on that front. It will be interesting to see how we replace him, which I am convinced we will need to do.

He could sign for foreign clubs with 6 months to go on his deal and domestic with one 1 month left.
Richard
Would a club like, say, West Ham be considered a step up?

dudevillaisnice
Without a doubt they are a step up. We are and have been going backwards. West Ham are going forward; New stadium, Europe, Good signings with a good squad and an interesting manager. Quite worrying actually how it is has turned out. Hopefully this changes soon.

I think you're over reacting with regards to West Ham. They've just been given a stadium they can't fill, and sacked a reliable (if not attractive) manager and replaced him with someone who has pretty much failed where ever he's been.

PaulC
Yes they are only renting the stadium, at least we own ours and we're just in limbo until the takeover. Always thought we are a bigger club than West Ham and still are. They are the 4th biggest club in London I guess and we are the 2nd citys premier club.
dAVe80
There really is no contest between us and West Ham. They may be in a better position that us at the moment, but come on! Anyone who thinks they're a step up from us, deserved to have Karen Brady as a boss!
sharkyvilla
All of that's true but it's not really relevant to Ron's situation. All he should care about is what he can achieve in what's probably his last couple of years at the top financially and on the field. If I was van Gaal I'd snap him up on a free, Vlaar wouldn't be under pressure to play every week but would add experience. He will probably just spend £100m on wingers instead though. wazzap24
Dunne and Collins were so much better in a villa shirt than Ron vlaar. Vlaar at his best is absolutely head and shoulders above Dunne and Collins at theirs. Both of those statements are correct for me. Vlaar hasn't really shown anything like his top form for us in his time here. His performances in the World Cup showed the kind of player he can be. Dunne and Collins (Dunne especially) were, for the most part, excellent for us. Both played arguably their best football for us under O'Neil. So in the Claret and Blue, D/C were better players, but in terms of their overall ability as players, I think Vlaar edges it over Dunne (just) Vlaar is a better footballer overall, slightly quicker and reads the game a bit better for me. Dunne's main strength was his latch ditch tackling, when he'd come in like a train from out of nowhere, just as a forward was about to pull the trigger. Part of me wonders though, whether the reason he had to make some many last ditch tackles, was because he wasn't that great at reading things in the first place? He also had the turning circle of a double decker bus at times. I'd also factor in that Dunne played in a much better side, with better defenders around him. I'm sure Vlaar would have looked pretty great in that O'Neil side.

They have Europa league next year and if they pay higher wages = a step up Can't see them taking the risk on him, they need a good sized healthy squad for next year Exactly they're in the Europa League, the graveyard of PL form. Sam Allardyce has done the usual thing and built a Big Sam squad that other managers struggle with, and history suggests that may be a problem. In this paragraph I was going to say how Villa are in the up but there is no evidence to suggest that we are. The only thing I can grasp to is that even at our worst we haven't been relegated. West Ham are relegation experts. They will struggle next season.
