romavillan Posted February 12, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) Aside from that total flop in front of goal, which left me on the floor, he was OK last night. When the ball went near him he either held it up or had a run at someone. He's had much worse games. Some really shocking first touches in there with some really nice runs from inside out to stretch their defence and open up spaces. Really mixed bag. He really just should just not think and go on instinct, he overthought that chance last night and his brain blue screened and crashed mulling over the possibilities of how to finish it. Laced first time and that's a goal every day of the week. Still though, we know he's not Pele or anything, he's fast as f*ck. Tomaszk
Agreed. A first time firm sidefoot probably would have worked as well.
Zatman
problem for Gabby recently seems when he gets an injury that it can take him about 5 games to get his groove back and up to speed
AntrimBlack
He doesn't have a good enough touch to play as a striker. Its blindingly obvious that he suits the winger role better. He gets more space and the extra bit of time he gets is exactly what he needs due to his bad touch and lack of composure. He also has a decent cross on him. Yes, as a striker, he does make a good winger. Goal shy, but a decent cross.
AntrimBlack
Crazy how people forget how Gabby has been one of our consistent performers this year. Really? Gabby's problem is his inconsistency, this year and every other year that I have been watching him.
villa4europe
problem for Gabby recently seems when he gets an injury that it can take him about 5 games to get his groove back and up to speed yeah, really didn't look fit at times last night still cant work out what he was trying to do with that chance though, should have took it 1st time before the keeper sets himself, after the 1st touch it then looked like he was trying to sell the keeper in to diving early and slot it past him, the end result was a mess
1958Villan
A lot of us have been saying for years that Gabby just doesn't have a footballing brain and I think he proved it again last night. Anyone with half a footballing brain has decided what he is going to do with the ball before it gets to him, Gabby seems to want to sit down and work out the possibilities after he gets the ball. Maybe he should chuck football and become a 100/200 metre sprinter.

ermie123
I think we should have him on the bench as he has never been prolific and he cannot play with a partner as his anticipation is very low as a striker this and finishing is paramount as these abilities outweigh everything else. As a striker you need to be in the right place, at the right time (anticipation) and be able to score (finishing) AKA Wayne Rooney, RVan P, Saurez, Shearer, Yorke, Saunders, Atkinson, InIngs, Austin ect ect

dakid007
Gabby is exactly the type of player we need to get rid of if we want to move forward. He is not a football player he is a athlete. He doesn't do anything well apart from compete but he has no skill with the ball, he is poor in front of goal, he has the shooting technique of a 6 yr old. We should offer benteke to utd for welbeck & cleverly & Powell Edited February 16, 2014 by dakid007

TRO
Gabby is one of our better players( in terms of the effect on a game, not ball skills)......and there lies our overall problem, If he's one of the best. we have gradually set the bar lower each and every year. since Merson left we have gradually got worse and worse, bit by bit.....not saying he was the only reason, (but he could be), just around that time..... we never replaced that kind of player. We seem to have had good players and just throw the towel in when its time to replace them or they move on.....just a defeatist malaise at the club its in the DNA of recent years. Gabby is not a good striker or winger therefore if we want to get into top 8 he is not good enough Gabby as a striker is not as good as Campbell, long, lambert, remy, bent,ba,crouch, bony,Defoe,Hernandez Gabby as a winger/wide is not as good as Valencia, nani, young,Milner, sterling, lennon, miralas, remy,Ben arfa, dyer, lallana, rodriguez, richardson, johnson, bolasie,Redmond,Moses We have built a squad we need to start filtering out the basic players for real quality. That's a good post and you're right. Those players are better strikers and wingers than Gabby. Gabby's a unique player. Very effective for counter-attack. He's a better counter-attack player than all those you list. When I say counter-attack I don't mean he's just fast on the break. He can track-back and defend, then receive the ball and break, hold the ball up, and score some goals. He's a unique talent. Arguably too unique for a team as basic as Villa's at the moment but would be very effective special teams player in a top side.
