Martin O'Neill

It seems that question the other day got under O'Neill's skin. Personally I didn't think his response was as aggressive or strident as it once would have been, personally I think he is suffering a little self doubt. This from a man who normally appears to have the skin of a rhino.

The article below is interesting because O'Neill basically unintentionally admits exactly what sort of manager he is. One who is a man manager rather than a coach who can only get a short term boost out of players and then needs to spend money to replace them with slightly better ones to repeat the trick. He as good as admits he can't improve players he has through coaching to get improvement

"I don't want to sound wildly boastful, but not only am I the best man for the job, I am actually the only man for the job."

Martin O'NeillQuotes of the week

"So what do you do then? So you go and put someone else in charge, he gets a group of 12, 13 games and can't win any matches? It's the same thing.

"I don't want to sound wildly boastful, but not only am I the best man for the job, I am actually the only man for the job.

"We will steer it through, we will get calmer waters ahead - it might take us a few months to do that - and then we will see. If we are continuing for the next couple of years to be in this position, then I will certainly question it then.

"Progress eventually, no matter what you think about it, is determined by results on the pitch, and we are in a similar position, so you could say whether we have made that sort of progress or not.

"It's interesting because it's really the same squad that we have had - we still have, I think, about 19 players from last season.

"The spirit is still there, and that was the thing I noticed most, really, that it hadn't been broken, and that spirit should stand us in really decent stead.

"But spirit alone is eventually not enough. Of course you need to add and we need to get stronger if we can."

If his results continue as they are he has no chance of being there in 2 or 3 years.

That was well spotted, Trent. MON clearly thinks the only two things he needs to do are instill spirit, and spend money on more players - no concept of training, tactics, etc.

A major reason why I prefer Lambert.

I think Sunderland will be fine. They have a better team than most of the sides in the religation battle but are struggling massivly for confidence.

Last nights result will be a boost to that but then they do have a tough run comming up over Christmas I think.

Taggart annoyed me this week seeing you can never question MON, what never? What if he relegates them can you question him then?

They won't be relegated unfortunately, however the villa finishing above them would be highly amusing..

Needs more players does he, in a similar position to us with far more premier league experience players"

Limited.
