this belief of he only needs one quality ball to score is utter nonsence

So far hes scoring 1 every 5 or 6 chances (many clear cut).

Lets get out of the thought hes a new fan favourite, and many want his babies - Hes a limited player. One of our more limited players imo.

Rubbish IMO. He is not a limited player. He is an excellent goal scorer or he wouldn't be alongside Rooney and Drogba in the scoring charts for the last 5 years (and that playing at lower level clubs than both of them). Is Given limited because he is just a good goal keeper?

We just have to recognise Darren for what he is - a specialist goal scorer - and work hard to get the team to focus on that and provide the service for him.

Im not sure on Given because Ive never seen him play - but I would imagine yes - theres a limit to what he can offer outfield. Point is, I have absolutely no problem with Shay Given focusing purely on keeping the ball out of the net.

I do have a problem, however, with Darren Bent waiting for the ball to arrive on a plate, because 50% of the season, hes not going to get it, and wouldnt have got it 50% of the time for as long as Ive been supporting Villa, We are no different - Still as woeful in possession!!

Bent's job is to score goals - his movement/positioning is fantastic and he is there to finish in from 6 yards so often because of this. I couldn't give a **** about the rest of his play, he's a clinical striker and we very much need him.

What about in the many games he doesn't score Lexicon. Do you give a **** then?

What a ridiculous argument. You have clearly never played up front Woodytom.

Actually, I have.

Never cost 20m though!

You are right he doesn't score every clear cut chance, but his conversion rate is better than 1 out of 5, its prolly closer to 1 from 3.

What makes Bent good is that his movement earns him those chances. He isn't going to pick up the ball and run past 2 or 3 defenders but what he will do is consistently find space in the box.

I agree. Yeah he misses a few chances but many strikers simply wouldn't get into those spaces to get the chances in the first place.

Bent will do well for us again this season. He could quite easily be sitting on 4 or 5 goals for us already. The chance laid on a plate for him by Petrov and the very good save by Al Habsi last week spring instantly to mind.

I'm confident, fitness permitting, that he'll score around 15-20 goals this season and I'm also confident Gabby can get a similar return.

I disagree on this as if he could improve his link up play and hold up play it would be of great benefit to both himself and the team. To compare an outfield player's limitations to a goalkeeper being a good goalkeeper doesn't make any sense. If you said something like Given is just a good shot stopper like Bent is just a good finisher then you may have had a point (incidently I don't think Given is just a good shot stopper). I do rate Bent, his movement is top class and he will always get and take chances but if he made some minor improvements to his game he could go from being a very good striker to a great striker.

I agree with this. He needs to improve his link up play and improve his conversion of easy chances into goals. I've no doubt the coaches are working with him on this.

Yes me too although the worrying thing about that is I've no doubt coaches throughout his career will have worked on it too. It doesn't make sense how uncomforable he is with his back to goal as his touch when the ball is played in front of him is good. All he needs is the ability to drop off the defender, hold up the ball and lay off a simple pass and he would be a far better player for it.

On friday night I paid specific attention to Bent and his movement is second to none. We just need someone like Ash to be putting those crosses in, hopefully Ireland and Nzog can do this because there is absolutely no point hoofing the ball up to Bent and expecting him to hold it up like Gabby or Heskey can.

Look at Javier Hernandez at United, getting in front of Dimitar Berbatov (who is a much better footballer, but not necessarily player) and all the others. Why? Because he has that instinct and gene that footballers seldom have. Berbatov can do everything much better than Hernandez, but he does not know how to be at that exact place at the precise moment. Darren Bent also has this in him, and that is why he played for England the other day.

Are people actually getting on Bent's back?

Dear god I've seen it all now...

Personally I feel he's been way too harshly criticised since he arrived. When you consider how quickly he settled in and what he's done for the team, I'd say so far he's arguably been our best player of 2011, yet people always seem to be on his back. He's the striker we've been calling out for for years and I for one feel we're very lucky to have him.
