The Film Thread

Anchorman 2 was fine.

Obviously never going to match the quality of the first movie, tremendously baggy in places and definitely overlong. There were a couple of story threads that could easily have been trimmed (I won't say which because of spoilers) and quite a few gags relied on retreads from the first movie (although one of these is brilliant in it's attempt to outdo the original).

But, to it's credit I laughed like a drain at a lot of it, and when it's funny it's really funny.

So pretty much what I expected to be honest. Definitely worth a watch if you love the original.

Just seen Alpha Papa. One of the funniest films I've ever seen. Brilliant.

did you get the glasses gag at the beginning ( most people I've spoken to missed it )

He's watching porn and you can see it reflecting on his glasses whilst he talks to Lyn about Kestrels (or some bird of prey) that he claims to be reading about

:)

No! I'll have to watch it again now.

Just watched it back. He's singing about coconuts at the same time as well. Coogan and Iannucci are geniuses.

Anchorman 2 is a complete mess of a movie. Totally indulgent from the cast. It's like Ace Ventura 2 is to Ace Ventura. Just doing the exact same jokes again slightly differently.

What did you expect? Honestly? For them to take a cult classic silly comedy and take it to a new place? People will go to watch that movie expecting more of the same. It's not going to have a complex story with twists and turns and characters with depth, it's going to have silly jokes and scenarios and funny ad libs. Jesus wept.

Thoughts on Cloud Atlas people?

I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure it translates brilliantly from book to film. That's not a slight on the film itself, it's just the structure of the story is better off in a book. It's a bit too complex for film and it left out some important details despite being three hours long (which is too long for a film in my opinion).

I'd give it a 7.5/10 too.

Just watched it and must say I agree that it seemed a very ambitious film to the point of being confusing. I haven't read the book but I'm more than willing to believe it's a good one. These kinds of multithreaded stories are much better on paper. For me, too much of the early part of the film is not enjoyable and is lost to too many moments of 'wtf is going on'.

It's a better film watched with a few mates with an attention span who you can chat about it with afterwards. I thoroughly enjoyed it, bit wouldn't have so much without help tying it all together afterwards.

I watched Withnail and I again recently. It hasn't lost anything.

I've never read the book either but I feel the same way that it must be a good one. I have no doubt that just with the way it's structured (and that it's much easier to see the structure itself when it's on the page) and by the fact you will undoubtedly get more detail, that the whole thing is better as a read than a visual piece.

Saw Gravity and Anchorman 2 today. Very disappointed in both. Gravity felt like it was only about an hour long and the movie was basically 45 minutes of Sandra Bullock breathing + the ending. I wasn't a big fan of Anchorman and wouldn't have gone to see this if my mate didn't really want to. Less funny and more stupid than the first one.

Gravity

8/10

Best performance from Bullock since Demolition Man

One question though

The jetpack George Clooney uses that is not real right? I've never seen any footage of any astronaut wearing one of those badboys

Yup Ash they do exist. Have a google of the science behind Gravity. I heard it getting slated when it came out initially but actually while it does take licence in some areas it is very accurate in others.
