Match Thread: FAC4: Chelsea v Villa

Hopefully Chelsea tire in the second half and we get some more of the possession, largely quite poor though, Lenglet fortunate to have not gifted them a goal, our players often seem isolated when we do get forward. They’ve been wasteful admittedly.

All that said we could be leading ourselves so all to play for!

This really seems to be on Emery, opposed to the players. You can't let them come at you and also hold a high line.  You either need to sit back and play a low block or press and play a highline.

I don't think Watkins goes missing. We just get like this where we provide literally nothing fir any of the front players.

Yep, easy targets for blame. We need to get a hold of the ball and dictate the play more… that will allow us to create more chances.  Losing the ball too cheaply… which is unlike us…

This was never going to be easy - we're away against a team that are in form and likely to finish in the top 6 after a really poor start to the season - they're a good side.

Keep the ball better and we have a chance.

I don’t think we’ve been as bad as the discorse on here would have you believe but Chelsea should have scored a couple of times.  Lenglet seems off it again, the well drilled back line of September to December looks sloppy and now opposition are snapping into Dougie early we struggle to use the ball as well as we did before.  We’ve still had our moments going forwards, if Chelsea should have scored then so should Youri.  I don’t think we’ll win this game but we’ve got a punchers chance.

Teilemens having a shocker and diaby absent.

Some lazy play and there been lucky 3 or 4 times when the ball has broken outside their area, mcginn has been hovering and each time it's fallen no where near him.

Thank goodness for emi some of our own making but 4 or 5 saves in that 1st half.

I can see diaby not lasting much longer in this match. Zaniolo or Bailey will be on.

As fans we need to come to terms with the amount of games left and the over inflated expectations we have. We have over achieved this season - so kill me. I **** love this club boys, but this is not a top 4 team.

Man we haven’t played well for quite a while now

tbh, the last time we actually played well was Man City, which was 9 games ago.

Emi indeed the main man for us that half, though McGinn looking up for it. It's a tough fixture, Chelsea on form and at home. They've had chances but ultimately we've also had some, and we still in with a decent shot here. Bailey to come on. They have put a lot into the press and played Tues so may fade.

Sure but he's streaky. When he's off form he's horrendous.

Kind of what “off form” means generally

Reckon they could finish above us? (If we continue as we have been since Xmas).

We have made Chelsea look like prime Barcelona. We have no central midfield, get Youri and diaby off and zaniolo and Bailey on

They press us high and we dont press them. Which leads to wave after wave. Emery puts shape ahead of having an aggressive press.  Which can work when you have control of a game, but leads to this happening when you don't.  Its Emerys pain point. Always has been

They look more aggressive, fitter, stronger and far better on the ball. We can barely keep hold of the ball which is isappointing because we usually pass well under Unai.

Man for man we're no worse than this Chelsea team but they look like they're in 4th and we're in 9th. We've been playing like this for a while and it's a real worry because we've had 2 weeks off and Chelsea played three days ago and yet again we look lethargic and uninterested.

It’s true that we haven’t played well in any match recently. However, this match is different. Most teams have backed off the high press against us recently and played the low block. Breaking the low block has been a problem for a long time. In this match, Chelsea are pressing high and doing it to perfection. Breaking the press is not usually a problem. Everyone who has pointed out Pau’s absence is right.
