I'm sure that there will be those on social media who will say that we've benefitted from some decisions lately and that evens it out (though I do think that those that we've benefited from were the right decisions, Villa bias or not). However, that was some **** awful officiating tonight.

The non-penalty for the foul on Watkins was utterly baffling. The handball one was utter bollocks. The disallowed goal was horseshit.

There was an air of inevitability about this result though. You just knew that the home run was going to come to an end sooner or later - it's just a shame that it had to come in a game like this when we had a great chance to jump to the top of the table, even if potentially only for a night. Make no mistake, Sheffield United were poor and offered next to nothing, but we were ponderous at times. Fully in control, but not really threatening enough in the final third considering who we had out there.

All things considered though, if you'd have told me we'd be sitting 2nd or 3rd in the table at Xmas, I'd have asked for a hefty dose of whatever you were smoking. I just hope that we can put this game behind us quickly and come out all guns blazing at OT.

We were too slow and static at times.

Playing a team who park the bus you can't keep playing sideways and slow.

Our best play came from moving behind their back four. They were happy to just sit knowing we were going to play slow....even obvious passes were so telegraphic....just pass the ball.

It didn't help cash on the right getting opportunities to run at the LB only to cut back and allow them to regroup.

We struggle against teams.like this...very rare we see our wingers one and one with the fullbacks.

But a point is a point....disappointing but it always is when we get hyped

I suppose these twunts have got payback for the ‘ghost’ goal though right?

It’s okay, we may not win the title, but they damned sure won’t have a return fixture at Villa Park next season outside of a favorable cup draw for us. Good on them.

Nothing to do with the ref or VAR. It pains me greatly to see VAR or a poor ref blamed for an under par performance by Villa.

Villa didn’t really create a clear cut chance until the goal in extra time. Poor all over the pitch with the exception of McGinn who faded in the second half.

I stated in the pre match thread that previously games such as these with high expectations on Villa tend to turn into a banana skin.

At least Villa didn’t lose and Man U won’t sit in like Sheffield did but Villa badly need more creativity in midfield in January if they are to grab a CL placement.

Breaking down a well drilled low block is tough, and Sheffield played a very low block; at half time they showed average positions and Sheffields CBs were basically on top of their GK.

Its why top teams go out and spend big money on players who can create in tight spaces.

We didn't help ourselves with some sloppy passing in the final 3rd. Could have done with Tielemans tonight.

"From what point does the VAR check incidents leading to a penalty or goal?

The VAR will only check the attacking possession phase that led to the penalty or goal.

The starting point will be limited to the immediate phase. The VAR may not go back to when the attacking team gained possession.

The VAR will consider the ability of the opposing defence to reset, and the momentum of the attack. "

Yeah, this is the bit that stings.

The keeper was up, on his line an unhindered by the time we regained possession. We then scored.

Goal should have stood.

And there it is. Regardless of your opinion on whether or not Ramsey was fouled first and caused the contact on the keeper, and whether or not that contact was enough to hamper the goalkeeper, the officials have literally re-written their own rules on using VAR to overrule the goal. Thanks for the apology tomorrow and kindly **** off please.

Don’t want to bleat because we heard the less classy clubs complain. We had three wrong decisions tonight that would have changed the result, but we have to now be prepared for teams parking the bus, this is what will define our season, not VAR.

We did enough to win, we played well enough, but we have to dig deep and find ourselves. Coming from behind shows we are not far off finding it.

Very complacent tonight. Too many players standing around like statues with very movement or will to go win the game.

A chance to go top for the first time in decades and the players decided to take most the game off.

Utterly disappointed in our attitude tonight more than the performance

And as for Birmingham City Council... Go f*** yourselves. Going around ticketing as as many cars as possible tonight between 8-10pm because they've got f*** all better to do. Unreal how scummy they are.

Indeed. Tielemans, Kamara and Pau would all have helped!

I don't want to be too downbeat, but going top, even for a day, was never going to happen was it? Just a typical Villa thing today.

But hey, we've been brilliant this season, so no moan from me. I'd have taken 4 points from Brentford and Sheff Utd, they just came the other way round!

Bankrupt council. Financially, and now morally, it seems.

Our attitude? lol.

We played as well as we could against a team only looking to defend.

Nonsense post.

But they wouldn't play 11 behind the ball against Luton and Burnley.

We missed Kamara and Pau no doubt and a spicy Telimans to bring on and see emm off.

Pau we missed the most today, lenget has looked tidy but 80% off his passes were sideways or back, meant digne couldn't attack or moreno.

Ramsey need to be coming on 20 or 25 mins for 5 or so games, not starting. He's a great player when up to speed, he's not upto speed and again, was responsible for our poor play down the left.

The disappointment of losing our winning streak added to a huge loss of 2 points against the poorest team by far, added to the chance to go top and muffing it up multiplies the disappointment.

Are we all happy being where we are ? of course, it's like our wildest dreams, it doesn't stop the disappointment of tonight though
