Summer Transfer Window 2023

I think for me the winger position itself is a poison chalice, we all expect too much from players out wide. Back in the day if they could cross the ball well and could beat a man and get to byline they’d be classed as a decent winger. Nowadays they’re expected to not only score double figures but assist double figures too.

For me it’s the clinical finisher that we need more so than a wing wizard. Bailey will do for now as I can see him (injuries permitting) pushing on next year.

I want us to go big on a striker and buy an up and coming winger in the Summer, a player that can grow with us and become world class.

Strikers just aren’t about anymore Premier League teams have spent big on traditional number 9’s that can’t reach double figures. I think even the likes of Jonathan David who would cost between £45m-£60m would struggle to score more than what Ollie Watkins does. Going big and finding a clinical striker would mean buying Lewandowski which we all know won’t happen. We need 5 or 6 starters and then bench players that can share goals.

Players like Lautaro Martinez and Victor Osimhen are out of our reach but we could potentially get someone like G. Ramos at Benfica (might be a push), B. Brobbey at Ajax, J. David at Lille (who would definitely out score Watkins), the two guys at Salzburg (Okafor or Adamu). I’ve also always liked the look of Evanilson at Porto but not sure you’d class him as an out and out ST/CF.

Failing the above I’d be game taking M. Dembele on a free

As for wingers I’m going to watch Ouattara at Bournemouth and Tete at Leicester as they might be worth some interest in the Summer. Ouattara’s stats in Ligue 1 were impressive.

Other worthy young to youngish RW mentions, Olise (Palace), Bynoe-Gittens (Dortmund), Solari (River Plate), Conceicao (Ajax), Cherki (Lyon), Bakayoko (PSV), Giovani (Palmeiras) and of course the linked Osorio.

I’d also like us to take a stab at either Xavi Simons or Kamada for the LM/CAM as well, greedy I know

I don’t think there’s a  guarantee that Brian Brobbey and Jonathan David would score more than  Ollie, there are so many strikers who’ve performed well in France,  Holland and Germany who have struggled to adapt to the premier league. In the past a post like yours would have had names like Werner , Haller and Gakpo.

David has 10 goals more than Ollie in the last 2.5 seasons while playing in a weaker league for one of the better teams

Balogun is top scorer in Ligue 1 and Archer got over double amount of goals he got last season

In real terms when compared to elite or potentially elite strikers it's nothing.  It's less than Middlesbrough paid for Britt Assombalonga.

A bargain like Gnonto is few and far between now.

Just as the days of going on holiday and paying £2 a pint and £10 for a 3-course meal are gone, so are those of being able to look overseas and sign very good players for a fraction of the price here.

Everyone knows the PL is a heady mix of cash and desperation.

We should just offer to pay £3-5m for every transfer and then pay the rest of it off the boo…… oh

Your post made absolutely no reference to wingers at all.

Just because you refer to Gnonto, how are people expected to infer from that you you are specifically talking about the winger position and not Leeds' transfer policy in general??

Even your posts before that didn't lead into talking about the winger position.

People on these forums are human beings, not Jedi.

Well i didnt mention any other positions did i?

If your "unsure" then ask for clarification of the post. I didnt mention any other player, i didnt mention a cb a keeper or a cm a WINGER.

So instead of thr poster moaning about "how he is sick of posts criticising our transfer business" (something i didnt do by the way which you fail to mention in your post) ask the question??

Human beings come on give me a break. No need to be dramatic and condescending your insulting peoples intelligence now

He's ruined that joke. You can't make a decent Jesus joke anymore. He needs to play in la Liga so I can make Religious jokes again.

You make a God joke these days and you get crucified.

God, Jesus, Moses and Abraham in the same team.....the mind boggles.

Sceptical we can tempt him away from Spain. But if anyone can it’s Unai. Nico is one of the most exciting and dynamic young wingers in Spain. Would be a huge statement of intent if it does happen.

Would be a massive signing but yes might prove difficult.

Makes sense to go for him when he has 1 year left in Summer. It's down to the player more than the club in that situation. Needs to sign a new deal with Bilbao or they sell him for 30-40m. Emery being Basque has to be a help

I think waiting for the summer makes a financial more appealing from our perspective with his contract running down.

What about Jeremy Doku from Rennes? His stock seems to have fallen in the past couple of years and isn't a first choice starter under the current manager. He doesn't seem in a rush to sign for a champion's league club and wants to learn his trade first,so might be interested in coming to us to develop under Emery.

I LOVE Doku!

I don't think he fits Unai's system though.

Hopefully this can be this summer's " Kamara " type coup.

Knew nothing about him before it came up, but the more I learn the more I want it to happen, hopefully the work to tempt him has already been in progress.

I knew nothing about him until the world cup and even when he came on and I saw Williams come up I thought it was inaki

Definitely sounds value for money even at the buy out price

Kamada could be the kamara type free transfer but I'm not sure if he would spell the end of Buendia and he's not the answer to the winger / striker problem we have

Kamada would be fantastic business too  - fantastic feet and much experience.

He has proven himself in Germany and is 27 in the summer, as a free transfer subject to the wage not being six figures a week I think he would be a good signing to play the role Bailey has been playing under Emery.

I will say though, without selling players a second forward signing would be too much this summer. Bailey, Buendia, Traore and Kamada  would be competing for ONE place.

I would assume even bringing in Kamada means one has to go.

Edit - It is telling that I completely forgot about Coutinho, I was just thinking about making a post as to what I think (at the moment) should be done in the summer so had a look at the squad and saw his name.

So Like I just mentioned I thought I would make a post of what I would look to do this summer as it stands right now and assuming there are willing buyers for our players in the summer at decent prices.

I'll start with the goalkeeper and back four

GK - We need a new back up, I hate having Olsen as backup I don't trust him as far as I could throw him which isn't very far. I have no recommendations, I am personally of the belief only GK coaches know who the best up and coming GK's are as it is so specialised.

RB - Jeremie Frimpong comes from a British background being a Man City academy product who went to Celtic then Leverkusen good stats, and young at 22. 2 Years left on his deal in the summer.

or     Tino Liveramento - if Southampton go down, I would pick Liveramento over Frimpong but if they stay in the PL the price would be crazy. I wanted him when he was leaving Chelsea and I still want him now.

LB - Borna Sosa, I have been on about him for a few years now and he is still only 25. Again very proven in Germany, gets lots of assists, gets forward well and lots of crosses. 2 Years left in the summer on his Stuttgart contract.
CB - Pau Torres the one everyone expects! He has a year left on his deal and is about as proven an entity as it gets for a player who hasn't played in our league

To leave -

Steer, Olsen, Cash, Mings, Digne, Hause

Some are easy to explain.....

Steer out of contract
Olsen don't trust him at all
Hause no longer needed
Digne hasn't panned out and we can't have players on 6 figures a week on the bench.

Now the not so easy.....

Cash is being kept out the team by a 38 year old and seemingly isn't fancied by the new manager. He is a decent right back but he isn't a starter for a club that wants to finish top 8 every year.
Mings is the most difficult one as he is currently the second best centre back we have. He is however 30 next month and out of contract in a year when we reach the summer. Better to let go of him now for a good fee.

I would imagine IF there were willing buyers for all those players I could see 60-70m coming in for them.
