Do we need to go BIG on a striker? We have Monchi don’t forget.

Monchis reputation is for scouting well, selling high and replacing well.

We don’t need to spend big money, hopefully he can sign the next Lewdowski before he makes it big.

We shouldn’t be disappointed with unknowns if they come in.

Did we?

The best transfer journalist in the last 10 years covering Villa says we were interested yeah. So I'd say we were.

I'd imagine most sensible people would agree.

Exactly. Some people are looking us to spend £60m+ on a striker just for the sake of it. We have one of the best talent finders in the business.

We were definitely interested in Barnes and I firmly believe he wasn’t an alternative to Diaby. That’s why I think we’ll see another high profile attacking signing.

FWIW, I’m indifferent on Barnes. Decent output but not sure he’s the man to help us push on.

The issue with that is that there is some sort of cap on the number of players you can loan out I think.

a top half premier league club isn’t going to blood anything but exceptional players.

Cross-posted from the Olsen thread:

----------------------------------------------------------------

Looking on Transfermarkt for GK free transfers:

Samir Handanovic - 39, experienced Slovenian international, played in Serie A

Timo Horn - 30, experienced German international, played for Koln for years

Benoit Costil - 36, experienced French international, extensive Ligue 1 career

And that's just the ones I know (didn't include De Gea)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Can anyone slip this into Monchi's drawers please?

Because we don't have the income to do it if we comply with FFP.

We wasted most of the grealish money so the amortisation of that 100m for the most part is accounted for. Our wage bill is surely higher than ever with 2 big free transfers in Kamara and Tielemans, never mind paying off the scouse gimp and his backroom staff.

The striker market is poor and you will be paying huge money to get equal or better than Watkins.

I nornally find myself agreeing with you but on this surely you must see we have spent very very highly in the past 3 or so years and we won't be getting much for our deadwood fringe players if we are honest.

All points to not spending 70/80m on a striker. It's just common sense.

Ok I understand your point although I don’t necessarily agree.  As I said I’m not convinced we will spend it on a striker but I think we can and as thabucks says we haven’t spent as much as you think.  I’d also prefer finding great deals like we have done for Tielemans and Torres, and I’m hoping Monchi will be able to do that in the striker department by finding a talent at a reasonable price.  Anyway, fabulous window so far, now for some outgoings and then see where we are…

Showed an interest and try and buy are completely different things.

Obviously, not at the same level - but we are in a slight Harry Kane / Spurs situation.

To get someone better than Watkins would cost 60 million and still be a huge gamble.

A mid level player wouldn't join to sit on the bench. They may as well go to lower table team and play every week.

Our best hope is getting a young prospect which we tried with Duran.
