But again, I don't think that's strictly true any more, not least because we don't only have 1 winger now, and Bailey can also fill in up front if we have an injury. (For reference our goals against is pretty much in line with all the teams around us). If you take out Ollie (15) and Ings (6) - then that leaves us with 30 goals. Our next top scorers were Luiz and Ramsey (6 each). Even accounting for the improvement post SG we're a long way distant from the teams above us. Man City scored 94 goals. If you remove Haaland's 36 the rest of their team still scored 7 more goals than us. They had 4 other players score more PL goals than our joing highest scorer with Alvaraz and Foden also scoring a significant number of goals in non-PL matches when Haaland was being rested - suggesting that they could score more PL goals if Haaland was not in the team and so reducing the impact of his loss. Arsenal had 4 players scoring more than 10 PL goals last season but have still spent big money on strengthening their attack. Man Utd are in a very similar position to us with their top scorer scoring more than twice as many as their second top scorer - an injury to Rashford and their goal threat is massively reduced. I think almost all their fans are worried about this. Newcastle had three players who scored more than 10 PL goals (and had to deal with Isak being injured) and have just signed another player who broke that mark last season. Liverpool had two players who scored more than 10 PL goals - but Darwin only just missed out (with 9) but he scored another 12 in other competitions. Brighton shared the goals around but still had 7 players scoring as many or more than our joint top scorers last season (admittedly mainly from midfield). Spurs are in a very similar boat to us and Utd - if anything even worse. They are massively reliant on Kane and so will have a huge problem replacing his goals when he leaves. Son still made it into double figures - but stop Kane and you stop Spurs. Their end of season collapse was at least in part down to them being so one-dimensional. So in comparison to the teams around us (with the exception of Man Utd) we are short on goals and most of our competitors have options should their main striker get injured (with players who can also play when their main striker is fit). Diaby will definitely help us score more goals and Ramsey might chip in with a few more as he continues to develop. But that's not going to close the gap to the likes of Newcastle, Liverpool, Arsenal and City. Neither of them are suited to leading the line if Ollie gets injured. Archer and Duran have never scored in the PL. So regardless of whether Ollie does or does not get injured - we still feel light of goals or we are relying on Archer getting double figures (or close to that) in his first full PL season. I think that very few people are suggesting we spend big money on a player who time-shares the CF role with Ollie. Most people are talking about players like Ferran Torres or Felix (different roles) who can play alongside Ollie and Diaby. (Whether it is either of those players or not I think that they are indicative of the type of players we are looking at). It would also mean that we could change formation or play Archer (but importantly with two other goalscorers along side him so that he isn't under massive pressure) if Ollie got injured. But it isn't just a solution for the "what if Ollie gets injured scenario" - it's something that allows us to pose a greater goal threat and be more balanced in the final third of the pitch in most matches or have more options in terms of formation / tactics depending on the teams we are playing and Ollie is in the team. This would put us in a similar position to City, Arsenal, Newcastle and Liverpool - with multiple players looking to break into double figures even if one is a more recognised CF and some fulfill other roles (but crucially provide options in the case of major injury issues). I do think that another attacking player means that we can then give more playing time / chances to Archer because subbing off Ollie doesn't remove all of our attacking threat. So we can afford to give Archer more minutes even when Ollie is fit to ease him into the PL and hopefully allow him to really stake his claim. If that works and we then have 4 players looking to break the 10 goal mark (plus maybe Ramsey and Doug a few behind) then we would be in a fantastic position and can rotate players more often to keep them fresher for what will hopefully be a long and busy season. I think the point is we should be looking to give them the best chance of succeeding. For me that means bringing in another goalscorer so that Archer isn't under immediate pressure to be our main goal threat after Ollie. If we can bring Archer on with support from say a Ferran Torres and Diaby then he's got more scope for scuffing a couple of shots and it not making a difference to the match result. He's also more likely to be provided with more chances when he is on the pitch and have more time and space because defenders are worrying about other players. And that doesn't even count the fact that hopefully with a really good front 3 we can be 2-0 or 3-0 up with 20 minutes left and bring on Archer to try and add further damage whilst being under almost no pressure. The more games we can control the easier it will be to blood some of our younger prospects outside of a "sink or swim" approach. Phase them in gently/slowly and then if / when they start producing to the level we all hope they will reach - then they'll start giving Unai some selection headaches. It could be that that is Match 1 - it might be Match 10 or Match 20. The point is by strengthening our attack if it is Match 20 then we're in a much better position to be able to deal with and manage that. Otherwise the risk (however big or small we think it might be) is that we're one bad challenge, muscle pull away from having that luxury removed and needing players to perform within their first three or four appearances.
