As we only need him in the short term, I wonder if we could loan him with a fee similar to what it would cost to buy (£3-5m mooted). It's a win win, as Lyon get some money for him and we aren't stuck with him for 3-4 years.

Not sure it would be a win-win though.  After all if he comes in and does anything like a half decent job over the next 6 - 12 months, then we should be able to sell him for a lot more than €3-5 million and probably more than his transfer fee plus his wages.  A 27 year old half-decent striker with PL experience (and no imminent contract end date) has got to be worth at least €18 million.  So we'd be doing ourselves out of a nice potential profit.  If he is better than half decent then that figure goes up to €25 million plus.  Even if he does a **** job we should be pretty comfortable offloading him for about what he cost (excluding wages).

We don't have a good record for shifting deadwood for a loss, let alone a profit.

But this isn't a typical situation.  If he had 3 years left on his contract then the chances of making any kind of profit in 6 - 12 months are reduced.  But €3m barely buys you a decent player in the bottom half of the Championship these days.  I'd say he'd either have to have a career ending injury or one of the worst 6 months known to any professional footballer ever not to be worth more than €3m in the summer.

Why would anyone pay €8m for a player they can already sign for free (but have to wait until June before the move is complete). 2 or 3m tops to get him in now.

Was going to say the same thing... It just made no sense.

Won't be a loan and player won't sign  short term deal when he broke break his ACL tomorrow.

Lyon will pass about to the last day of the window playing silly buggers until they realise they're only going to get a couple of million.

Somebody's been up all night drinking 😂
