just rewatching the game.

Seeing Dendoncker just sitting in front of the defence, using his size and strength, recycling the ball in a basic but intelligent way, exactly the type of physicality, height and power, with competent basic recycling of the ball is exactly what we have needed in the no.6 role for a long time.

Watching Luiz paired with Dendoncker, helping defend, but knowing Donk is next to him being able to roam a bit and help control the midfield and build pay etc.

Seeing Bailey and Watkins hugging the lines and making the pitch as wide as possible, and offering threat from the wings.

Seeing Buendia playing the 10 role, drifiting around, being intelligent, linking play, and working like a terrier.

Seeing Ings properly supported by the forward line and other players.

Sometimes just playing the right basic tactics, playing the right players in the right positions, dropping the players who need dropping, giving chances to players who make the team team overall and not just individually, is just great to see.

Im not going OTT, as we will have ups and downs, will prob lose to Toon lol, but its so pleasing and refreshing to see what Danks did and the impact it had, i havent been so happy about a result in recent years since the 7-2 vs Liverpool, and tbh im probably even happier, as its like a release after the Gerrard debacle, and vindication that players like Donk, Buendia, Bailey, as well as others, do have so much to offer this team when played correctly.....

Two things from yesterday that had nothing to do with the actual game.

Two of my hereos came out at half time Jimmy Rimmer and Tony Morley to applause but only made it to the dug outs why did they not walk round to the front of the Holte I wonder? I saw one of them with a walking stick maybe he couldn't walk any further 😥

The other "thing" was sitting in the upper Holte in my usual seat I was deafened by the "music" - why is it turned up to volume 11 half hour before ko? I was chatting to a guy from Norway who had visited 78 of the 92 league clubs on his list when he started in the late 1970's. This week he had been to Grimbsy Town and had then seen Ipswich Town play and finally us. It was so difficult to hold an intelligent conversation with such a knowledgeable football follower with the bloody racket on in the background even he mentioned it?

Maybe it's something that can be bought up at the next fans meeting with the club officials...

I wasn’t surprised I doubt he was match fit enough to play the full 90 minutes.

The thought crossed my mind too. But 53 min? Belgium international can't manage a bit more than that?

It's funny, I've never paid any attention to basketball outside of school PE lessons and always assumed it was a super simple, basic game. But any time I catch any references to it on TV it always seems layered with levels of complex technical discussion that literally sound like the nonsense that I wrote above.

Football isn't like that, but it feels like it's heading that way.

I don't want to go too far OT, but...

In some ways basketball is similar to football...it's about time and space. I've heard of football managers studying basketball for ideas. The big difference is that basketball lends itself better to set plays. In football, the ball is almost always open to challenge; you have to keep moving or you'll lose the ball, so you can't set things up. In basketball, you can park in one place for a bit, hold the ball, and wait for your teammates to go run some predetermined play. I've heard Englishmen say that basketball seems to lack flow; it's really more a game of sudden cuts.

Of the North American sports, ice hockey is probably closer in feel to football, because again, the puck is always open to challenge and the plays is always on the move. It has some flow to it.

63 mins he came off. I think the 60th minute is fairly standard to bring off players that haven’t played much recently plus we’d just scored the 4th goal so Danks probably thought Dendoncker had done his job, let’s get some fresh energy on to finish off the game.

Also probably more importantly good to give McGinn a decent outing because even if Danks doesn't think he has a future with the club you can't just bin off players you don't like. Showing the current captain that he has a place in the team is very important.

Watched it for the first time. You could see the difference width made to us with the second goal. Bailey hugs the touchline, drawing the defender across, then a little jink followed by a run inside and he's in behind. Liked the look of Cam on the right too - I've seen him play there for the U21s and he has that same movement to get in behind his marker. None of the through balls worked for Buendia but the extra space gave him the chance to try them, and you only need one to work and we are in.

Bailey is our best attacker when he's on his game and a priority for our new manager must be to unlock the potential of this bloke. Keeping him close to the touchline should help.

The only question for me (if we are playing 4-2-3-1 going forward) is what to do with Ramsey. Think we are better off with specialist holding midfielders in the middle and wingers/forwards out wide. We already have two number tens also. Big fan of his but he didn't offer the same threat in behind playing from the left in this game.

The pass by Young to Bailey in the build up to the 2nd goal is utterly sublime.

Not getting nearly as much attention as it deserves.

100 % agree.  The amazing thing was Bailey seemed to know exactly where the ball would be and sent off a millimetre-perfect pass to Ings.
That sequence is what football heaven looks like.

Just watched a replay Bailey was watching Young's sublime pass.

Shearer tried to put all the blame on the players, but at least it was mention that there were a formation change and that McGinn was dropped.

Ashley Williams was better than Shearer, pointing out the impact of personnel and formation changes.

Even though he is a bad boy.  😛

Not sure if you were great or we were just crap I expect it’s somewhere in the middle although you came out the trap like greyhounds.Better atmosphere than I thought there would be and we were shell shocked after 15 mins. Our injury list is horrendous and a club our size will always struggle but I suppose the next week will see how much impact that result has with you at home to United and us playing Wolves.I always expected days like this most weeks when we went up but that has rarely happened although Toon put 5 past us last away game.We should have our full squad available after the World Cup and think we will have a better second half to the season but if that fails I won’t shed tears if we go back to the Championship which our club is more suited to.The PL is set up for the usual top 6 occasionally one other club will break through for a season the rest look over their shoulder hoping to keep in the tv money pit.Good luck for the season your stadium deserves a good team.

good post....Brentford won't go down and I didn't think you were that bad......That performance was a long time coming for us, and I fancy, our enhancement was the main factor.

I agree, I think our stadium/ fanbase does deserve a good team..... for us now, its about consistency, The toon game, will be an acid test and a good game to win.

best of luck for the rest of the season.

I think Jimmy Rimmer is poorly.
