As it stands calling back Barry and having him as an option would be better than nothing, might sound a little crazy but at the moment Brad Young probably our third choice striker in terms of players that specialist centre-forwards, might not even be needed, just someone that's there if we do need him, and who knows might be one of those players that does better at an higher level with better players around him, similar to Archer.

I think Brad Young might be like that anyway, always looks like he can finish (without watching any of his time in Scotland).

We are in a difficult position, we want champions league quality players and will pay the fees but January is a difficult and expensive market and we will struggle to match the wages of the champions league teams if it comes to persuading.

I just hope selliing Ings doesnt bite us in the arse with 18 games to go. This isnt looking like a clever move if nothing happens until the window closes.

That aside I am confident we get better from here until the seasons end with the squad we've got, and we are 4th on form since Emery arrived so it shows we can get a tune out of this squad and are punching up. It could be worse.

I think that is the biggest worry Jim....that the momentum, is not undone.

The fact we are out of all the cups, probably plays a part in the thinking, of just a clear out.

If this was a movie it would end with young Brad proving the doubters wrong, scoring double figures and taking us to Europe.

Buendia as a false 9 anyone?

What I don’t understand re the Guendouzi deal is what is going on.

Let’s assume the speculation is correct, which is very dangerous.  We have contacted him and he’s happy to come but we haven’t contacted Marseille at all to buy.

So fans saying this is a summer deal but why? Can’t be because of the price because we haven’t bid, we haven’t asked for the price, we have no idea if the deal is more likely in the summer than now.  If we haven’t bid or even contacted Marseille then why is it more likely in the summer than now?

Sanson has gone out so we’ve shipped out a midfielder for a place, Emery apparently wants Guendouzi….so what am I missing?  Surely if Emery wants him, why would he delay if he can get him in now because it’s not about price because we don’t know about price because we haven’t bid.

Either Marseille are lying about contact or we aren’t that interested in Guendouzi, if this deal doesn’t happen by tomorrow.  If we haven’t even bid by close of the transfer window, I’d question whether we are even really interested.

Imagine Ashley Young passing to Kadan Young who crosses for Brad Young at the far post.

I imagine we've bid and not matched their valuation. That's the part the press isn't picking up. I think the interest is real but it's too late in the window now I feel to get it done.

So Marseille are lying? I have no idea, but both the English side and the French side of the media are all saying via their contacts that we haven’t contacted Marseille and even a week ago the Marseille CEO (who has a dubious past on these kind of things) said we haven’t bid but they are waiting for contact.

I think the club,  like a lot of people right now are just waiting until payday tomorrow.

Don’t be ridiculous.

Everyone knows paydays are Tuesdays.  That’s why we buy on Wednesdays.

oh… wait…

Well, yes. That's not surprising. They're recent Europa League winners, and pushing for CL this year, after all.

Wow, I forgot they were in the Champions League semi-final last year as well. Emery really did a fantastic job with them (not to say they were terrible to begin with).

I remember Villarreal being a cool team to follow at school because of Riquelme, plus they've been regulars in Europe (Europa League and CL) since the early 2000s, haven't they? Little wonder they've got more appeal than us.

It all started with some rumour on twitter, then Emery got asked if the question in a press conference and then someone else on twitter cut the footage  of Emery mentioning Matteo,  the only concrete thing Emery said in the press conference is we will sign players only if they improve our team and that we would be “so demanding” which basically means that we are being very fussy  and looking for serious quality. He also mentioned the real priority in this window was to move a few on and find a specialist winger.

They’ve been relegated 4 times in the past 30 odd years, the only major trophy they’ve ever won is the europa league with Emery.  They’ve been a top 6 side a few times along the years and recently though yes.

I understand the club had a smart meter fitted at the training ground recently and if they switch everything off between 5pm-6pm on a Tuesday, they get £10 off their next bill.

Look after the pennies and all that……..

Could be what’s holding up a couple of deals?

It’s obvious why Marseille haven’t heard from us, we haven’t told them. We’re going to just pinch him. Wes has a couple of mates from Hereford that do a bit of freelance work from time to time. The player wants to come so no problem.

We now have a very good head coach adding tactical confidence to our squad on a daily basis .... we are visibly improving and results back this up. We have a decent first team and some reasonable options on the sub bench.

Of course I'd love to see us sign two real quality additions (mid/st), but I'm not stressing about it because we have enough players to get us through the next 18 games.

The thing that has most impressed me this transfer window is that we have at last shown a more ruthless attitude to clearing out unused and unwanted players. We've freed up space and wages for a real assault on the transfer market this Summer.

If the lack of the much speculated about signings is down to Emery being prepared to wait until the specific player (or type of player) that he really wants is both available and willing to sign for us, then that is a positive thing.

If Unai is concerned about striker cover he now has loan spots available. We'll know more in just over 31 hours.

I still think we will look to bring in someone. I'm sure we started the window wanting a midfield player (likely Guendouzi) and a forward (probably a striker/wide player a bit like Watkins was when he joined, but the emphasis would have been more on him being able to play wide this time). I suspect that we let Ings go, because it made financial sense and in the expectation that we would be able to get a forward in. I think the priority now is the forward, as has been said we won't presently be spoilt for choice should Watkins or Bailey be injured or should they need taking off during a match, if they are having a stinker. They also need some competition for their shirt, in my opinion. I'm hoping that if we don't do a deal today, that the lights will still be on until the transfer window slams shut on deadline day evening, as we try to get a last minute deal over the line.
