Tbh, Luiz is what most defensive midfielders are like these days - it's more about pressure and positioning than physical combativeness and swashbuckling.

This 100% , DMs are no longer just blockers they are required to start play and be available support higher up the pitch

Great player. Same passing and close control as Luiz, but with much more discipline in position and a lot more snap in the tackle.

Needs other CMs to play much closer, both to the side and in front, to make full use of his ball winning abilities to set breaks off.

Luiz needs to start next week as he will stay close to Kamara and not wander off chasing after the ball.

Typical Villa if those two forge a great understanding and we then lose Luiz on a free transfer.

tbf he looked class on the whole.

However, still using this fricking formation that isolates him and leaves him exposed, then Kamara looking around him and seeing McGinn hiding and Ramsey doing whatever he is doing, no movement around him, just wtf are we doing, also his other two midfield partners cant pass the ball.

At one point he was further up the pitch and won the ball, 30 odd yards from their goal, he looked around for literally multiples of seconds and there was nobody around him, or showing for the ball, its shocking.

wtf is this squad doing during training.

Movement has been a problem for probably pushing 25 years now. Even during the top 6 finishes our midfield movement was poor

HE's a very good player, will reiterate again that he needs help.

He should actually be the one doing the Luiz role, and we need a version of Nakamba who is just as good beside him.

Sitting on the bench looking at inferior midfilelders (not Kamara) ahead of him?

Put Luiz beside him and watch the midfield magically improve. Two very intelligent and technicallly gifted players capable of keeping the ball in tight spaces, who can also nip in and rob opponents of possession as well as read the game. Ramsey (young, still time to learn) and McGinn are awful at knowing where to position themselves and proactively noticing danger.

I actually expected Luiz to start, with all the positive noises coming out.

I love JJ but he's not been at his best and he's still young, he doesn't need to always be starting.

Thing is as some say, SG really does seem to have his favourites and will stick to then.

Seems he prefers midfielders which potentially " remind him of himself " without realising that running around aside they are nowhere near as good so won't have the same effect. Lol

He definitely seems to have this problem, but it is apparent that he forgets his best seasons and best performances came with Hamann/Xabi Alonso/Mascherano/Lucas Leiva, quite often two of these, providing the structure for him to run about the place like a lunatic.

Furthermore, some of his worst performances were when the midfield didn't have this structure or Gerrard was meant to be part of this structure. Take the 2005 CL final. First half Gerrard is playing CM with Alonso, runs about like a headless chicken, leaving oceans of space for Kaka (then World player of the year?) to do what Kaka does best. HT 3-0 to Milan. Second half Hamann comes on, sits alongside Alonso, and Gerrard continues running around but the structure is there to allow him to do this. We all know what happened in the end. Basically Gerrard's best and worst performance in one match.

Totally agree about our movement. People often forget it’s how chances get created too. Player makes movement and Boubs will find him.

Watching lower half teams and some championship teams with dynamic intelligent movement is both a joy to behold and depressing to watch because we can’t seem to do it. It needs to improve.

The position he’s playing is probably the most difficult to play in our side. Gerrard hangs anyone out to dry who plays as a 6 because the two 8’s are either too far forward or covering the fullbacks after they’ve impersonated wingers.

It’s a thankless task and I’m sure he’ll get a lot of criticism at times when in reality, the system we play is so flawed as we don’t have the right players to play it. That and the fact the system sucks in general.

He needs someone alongside him who isn’t told to support the attacks and who also isn’t told to play wide to cover fullbacks. You know, so the whole opposition midfield isn’t running directly at you without a team mate in sight.

The midfield is such a mess. Kamara is a good player but he’ll be exposed so often and probably unfairly criticised for it. He’s a good player.
