It seems almost pointless doesn't it. A constant cycle of managers and players and hundreds of millions spent, for marginal gains.

:(

Modern football for you. The game is absolutely dead. I genuinely have no interest in the sport.

If we're serious about challenging for Europe and beyond, then we need to improve our squad massively, yes the current team have done well to establish us as a midtable team, but if we want to go beyond that we're going to have to start buying a better class of player. As it stands, Martinez, Mings, Konsa, Luiz, McGinn, and Watkins, are probably the only players in our whole squad that would interest top six teams and some of them it's perhaps debatable, perhaps Martinez is the only one that would be a regular starter for a top six side, maybe Konsa too...

Point is we've got a lot of improving to do, and I think Gerrard will be quite ruthless, I don't think he left Rangers half way through the season to mess about, can see us spending a stack of dough on quality to get the team up to his standards, maybe much of that will happen in the summer, but I think if we can get the players he want in January then we will do so.

Agree with most of this. The disagreement is over ‘maybe Konsa too’ : right now only Martinez would be a regular starter in a top 6 (or even 4) team. Konsa is one for the future so I’m looking forward to who SG can bring in to improve our team. One thing for sure it won’t all be done this window.

Same here about the quality in the squad, most are easily mid table a few of whom need more time to settle. Emi Martinez is our best player.

Gerrard will know this already and he has already stated that we are going to be active in the market, just hope we can get his top targets and hopefully a couple in this window, having a nice run in preperation for next year would be great. then add the rest in the summer.

I've just seen someone on twitter quote the daily mail as saying we've 'joined the hunt' for Denis Zakaria. Not sure if he's a DM, I watched him for Switzerland in the summer and he looked more like a box to box midfielder, a very good one though.

The sad thing is I think you become even more of a stepping stone club when you get to the level we’re at now. Good enough to attract players who don’t want to battle relegation, but can’t offer European football or a particularly realistic chance of silverware in the short term.

i suppose the only positive might be that we only have two PL games in Jan (Manure & Everton), so it might give us a really good chance to get some players in and them have an impact on the rest of the season.

Patterson off to Everton.

Thats a shame . Especially as we only have 2 specialist senior full backs and one on loan . . I think he has the physical attributes to be a really good player

I'm positive if Gerrard wanted him, we'd be in discussions as well.

He must see Cash and KKH as the future here

LB, DM and a CB are on the list for incomings. It’s clear as day.

DM is the one we must get right. And incidentally the position that most on VT were begging for in the summer (Kenneth Williams gif).

CB is seriously starting to get severe too.

I don't think we were likely going to be in for Patterson anyway, he's a young right-back, we've already got a very highly rated one of those of our own who's just signed a five year contract, I know some have this idea that he should be getting top ratings on 'whoscored' and winning man of the match every week just because he's playing in league two, but it doesn't work like that, that he's been selected every week and for the most part seemingly performing well is a good sign.

Yeah but its the present we need . We dont even have any youngsters at full back at Bodymoor . With Axel going that means theres zero options there if Cash gets injured and Young is out or covering left back .

Defence is looking really really weak .

Cash and Targett with Young to cover both positions .

Mings and Konsa with Hause to cover

I would not be suprised if Guilbert is brought back

Over time we need even more. The limiting factors are time and money - that’s why people talk about being able to compete at the top level being 2years+ away.

So here is my view on the team thus far this season.

Martinez: 8 /10 I feel he lost his mojo slightly amid the argiegate stuff and his concentration maybe wavered slightly for example West Ham (H) But a great keeper and happy he's here and looking back to his best under Gerrard. KEEP

Targett: 4/10 occasionally he puts in a strong tackle defensively....but isn't that surely what any Premier League LB should do as an absloute minimum? Otherwise for me personally he needs replacing as the number of attacks which break down due to his shocking use of the ball is incalcuable. REPLACE

Cash: 6/10 I do like Matty but he is just so rash and always liable to give away a Penno or over commit. He carries the ball forward well enough and is quick but again his end product  final ball is woeful 19 times out of 20. DECENT BACK UP

Mings: 8/10 He can be a colossus and has saved our bacon a lot more times he has cost us with his occasional amatuerish lapses. For me about as good as we could get at this time. KEEP

Konsa: 8/10 I like him a lot. Still learning but very happy with his progress. KEEP

Nakamba: 7/10 So unlucky to get injured badly just as he found his moment here. KEEP

McGinn: 7/10 There is a very good player here although he can be expensive with the ball posession wise. He is the guy who goes for the juggular if the opponent but occasionally it backfires, he commits in the wrong situation and we lose posession needlessly. Maybe Gerrard can help him with this. KEEP

Ramsey: 8/10 I was unconvinced earlier in the season, now i'm convinced. He is still raw & will make mistakes but a real player here for the future. KEEP

Sanson: 5/10 Way to early to call, not enough appearances to tell still so at the moment KEEP

Buendia: 4/10 Very disappointing thus far. Has moments of brilliance in him but at what cost? JURY IS OUT

Bailey: 5/10 Looked so good against Everton but then what happened? Clearly needs time before judging him KEEP

Watkins: 6/10 Looks out of sorts to me this season. I just get the feeling he'll be off at the first chance. His finishing is pretty average and he needs to work hard on it like Lukaku did. He also needs to learn when to pass more. Still a tough guy to play against but could do better for me. KEEP

Ings: 7/10 I like him a lot, a true predator but needs to learn how to play with Watkins. KEEP.

Traore: 4/10 Way too expensive with posession for me. Has the odd trick and goal in him but again, like Buendia, at what cost? SELL

Elghazi: 5/10  He's had way too many chances here for me and is so frustrating. One chance too many though SELL

Trez: 2/10 Tries but not up to the required standard: SELL

Hause: 5/10 Simply ridden with mistakes and struggles so badly when pressed. SELL

Luiz: 6/10 Another frustrating player. Can be very solid & physical but offers nothing going forward and disappears now & then like against Brentford. OK SQUAD PLAYER

Young: 6/10 Has quality on the ball and can cover various positions. I thought DS misused him badly which exposed him but an ok squad player OK SQUAD PLAYER FOR THIS SEASON

Steer: 5/10 Not premier league standard for me. SELL

Tuanzebe: No point commenting as he's already off.

As for the kids, Chuk, Archer etc of course they all need games to develop, so KEEP

And yet you're an established member of a football forum. Odd.

Because I love Villa. It's a drug. No matter how much I hate the sport, my love for Villa will never go. Odd how you needed that pointing out.
