Sounds like he'd be more suited to one of the two CM positions rather than the DM.  But he's still young, so perhaps SG see's something different in him.

Yep. It was an easy fit in the Smith system as we had the DLP and 2 CMs which we replicated in the U23s with Lindley, A.Ramsey and Tim (at times) but now the system has changed it's a little harder to say. I think he'd fit in fine but seeing as things are a little toxic right now, I wouldn't want to chuck him in for the Watford game.

Seems like we have an overabundance of young box to box type midfielders, which doesn't really fit the current system as they are expected to sit and cover the full backs.

It is a bit of a problem tbh and I think that Gerrard and co. need to make the most of what we have and adapt their game somewhat.

Whatever the debate, Iroegbunam doesn't tend to just sit in front of the defence - in pretty much all the games I've seen him, he's box-to-box, intrepid and dynamic.

He is, but what he does really well is pick the ball up off the back four, protect it and move it along - that's the primary role of the position and Luiz's strength too - it's where I think that Iroegbunam might be a decent option.

Tim is dynamic because of his energy and his hard and tenacious tackling style. Not because he is all the way up the field trying to score. His style is win the ball and then pass either short or long up the field. He doesnt tend to do the break the lines progressing of the ball at all. He is a deep lying playmaker as much as a dm because of his wonderful passing range and style.

Other than Dougie and Nakamba we only have those kinds of midfielders and both of those have been fantasy-sold by the fanbase over the last 6 months. Gerrards system is going to need to start paying dividends soon.

He's done wonders for Ramsey, hopefully the same can be true of the others.

Just not convinced even if they do well that the system works. But happy to be proven wrong. In theory before he joined it sounded exciting. In practice so far we've managed to be poor in attack, overrun in midfield and leaky in defence. We aren't good at any phase of play consistently. A lot of issues to fix.

There may have been some mind games mentioning him as "really close" to 1st team a few weeks back as a threat to DLs place.  Luiz played worse against Newcastle so he's got every chance of playing today I recon.

Probably on what all the 13year olds who’ve never watched him are saying on Twitter

I mean he literally hasn’t featured for the first team yet. Not even ten minutes at the end of a game. What do we have on him to suggest starting him today is a good idea?

I’m not saying he isn’t ready by the way, I just don’t know how people seem to be so sure.

Look at how Ramsey struggled to make an impact initially and he even had a loan under his belt playing men’s football.

Not an expert of youth football but I’d guess that the best prospects at that age are just better all-round players both attacking and defensively and it’s only when they step up to senior football they become a bit more specialised. I remember Jordan Henderson when he first played for Sunderland he was considered a box to box or even an attacking midfielder, you certainly wouldn’t look at him now and describe him as that
