wishywashy
Any signings that work out = Emery signings Any signings that don't work out = Lange (and/or Purslow) signings

wishywashy
Marca report (albeit not in a full article but their ticker thing) that we have interest in Monchi. Feels a bit of a lazy link given that we're clearly after a sporting director from La Liga and Monchi is rumoured to be leaving, but hey ho. https://www.marca.com/futbol/mercado-fichajes/2023/06/07/64802efdc83c250028d3bfc1-directo.html Quote Aston Villa pays attention to... Monchi After a first failed attempt to get the services of Mateu Alemany , something that at first left more than one undaunted, it seems that in Birmingham they are still looking at LaLiga Santander to do with the services of another sporting director with international prestige. This would be none other than Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo (Monchi), whom we have already verified has a bittersweet feeling about how this season has developed, despite the final victory in the Europa League. In England they place him as a more than interesting profile to land in the Premier League and conscientiously reinforce Unai Emery 's squad in order to play a great role both in the domestic championship and in the Conference League. Do you see Monchi outside Sevilla?

With Purslow now out of the way, It makes me wonder if we will see Lange excel in future signings with the new team he will now be working with in Heck and Monchi. It also speaks volumes that Emery rates him.

That speaks volumes IMO. Unai is no mug. I still think signing players is the one area you need a specialist team to cast the net far and wide. Yes Emery can see player X and say he's good, could be brilliant. But he could also do that if you can find him a very similar player who costs a quarter of the price and gets paid £60k a week less. Basically we look at Brighton and see their inherent advantage because of the unrivalled data of Blooms betting company. They use masses of data to input into models to predict the probabilities of win draw loss in games with an Asian handicap. That data system has been pivoted to assist Brighton. We can't compete with it but we can build one at Villa or V Sports level to at least be second best to those like Brighton and Brentford which have the data advantage. I'm sure this is why Lange has not been impacted by any of this. Purslow seemed to do the negotiations that a Sporting Director normally does. So Lange didn't have the type of role we associate with the Sporting Director ala Monchi type. So with Purslow moving on. Nassef is probably now Executive Chairman and then he's got 4 highly capable people below him to manage the key aspects. 1

Heck - business/operations Lange - scouting/data Monchi - identify, negotiate, sign Unai - final call on players, execute on the pitch

wishywashy
Quote Johan Lange will assume a key role as Global Director of Football Development and International Academies. This ensures that his deep knowledge of the squad and the academy will provide cohesion and continue our successful player development pipeline. In the Monchi announcement. As predicted by a few on here, seems like his role has been shifted to one of a training/academy one at V-Sport level.
