Let me address it this way. I would like front 3 of AML and AMR either side of Watkins. Ideally these fancy new signings nearly done or rumoured. We have AEG and Trez in mix as competition for those spots.

Jack wants to play central and I want him there too.

That's 3 spots in mid left for Grealish Luiz McGinn. I wouldn't drop any of them for a new DM

well.....Grealish is attacking and McGinn is essentially attacking.

are you going to leave it all up to Luiz to stop the opposition pouring forward?

If John is firing on all cylinders, he could wade in, Jack as much as I love him, doesn't stop Marauding raiders....but for me there is more questions than answers......not sufficient dedicated steel in midfield for me, sorry.

If you don't think Luiz and McGinn are good enough defensively in the middle we'll have to agree to disagree. I think Nakamba is a decent DM cover player also

cover ,maybe.....I'm looking at the first eleven.

Don't waste your time pal.

Don't worry Chris, I have made my point.....if folk disagree, fine.

some are misinterpreting what I am saying, but it doesn't surprise me, but hey ho.

Yes definitely but let's say the forward 4 is and I'll use rumoured signings as placeholders, Rashica Watkins Traore with Grealish behind that's 2 mid spots and I want Luiz and McGinn

yeah I get that.

but I don't see Luiz and McGinn as the 2 holding players, sorry.....I could be wrong.....but I see John McGinn as more attacking, sure when he is at his best he can turn the ball over, but I don't see that duo stopping good opposition, from raiding us and putting pressure of the 2 CB's

maybe its just me.

I like both players, but don't see them in the same light as you do.....I am looking for more defensive capability.

What relevance is height to CDM? The greatest ever IMO was 5'9" Makélélé

So many great ones have been over 6 foot....you have just chosen an exception.

I just happen to think the taller ones give you some aerial power to protect the Cb's

I don't like small Goal Keepers either and small centre backs give me the Heebie-Jebbies......but no doubt, there are some exceptions of those too.

when they ban heading the ball, I will change my opinion.

Nah, we were dire at winning balls in midfield, especially in the air. With a couple exceptions, the teams contesting fewer aerial challenges than us were the top sides stocked with higher quality all around and better able to press and/or keep the ball (and the two other poor teams tried the same approach, just sans the quality to do so). We also ranked poorly for tackles (oddly enough while having  statistically one of the best tacklers in the league in Freddie) and had the most blocked shots, meaning, as we all knew, it was too easy to get through to our defensive line and force them into action for most of the season. Sure, Doug elevated his game towards the end, but he, SJM and Jack all ranked among the poorest headers in the league, while most of our blocks and interceptions came from defenders, meaning if we can't outplay every team we come against on the deck for whatever reason (either due to superior quality or long ball tactics) or, assuming we do have sufficient quality now, one of those three lose form/get injured, we're likely to have issues. Someone who can come in particularly against many of the sides we need to overtake and take a few balls out of the air or win some physical battles before it gets to our backline would relieve a lot of pressure, not to mention offering more attacking threat on corners and set pieces.

Eduoard for sure but now Watkins is here I’d spend the 40m elsewhere anyway.

No point having great strikers up front if you let too many in the other end

That's a tough one, had we not signed Watkins i'd 100% be Tammy. But Edouard feels like a bit of a wildcard and could offer something a bit different to Watkins.

I’m gonna show these to my mum and ask her if she still thinks I ought to always respect other people’s opinions?

This whole Edouard love in reminds me of the time every man and his dog on this forum were begging for us to sign Alfonso Alves because he was smashing goals in at a rate of 1 per game in some Mickey Mouse league.

Boro bought him for a club record £13 odd million and he was utter garbage.

Anyone willing to splash £40m on a player from the SPL over a player that scores 15 in 34 in the premier league, and 3 in 8 in the champions league (in my humble opinion) needs their head examined.

Anyone else curious why Lange is at home in Denmark atm at probably the busiest time of the year for him? It could be for family reasons I’m sure but it could also be he’s working on a deal for a Danish based player right now?

Hopefully it’s Mohammed Daramy, only 18 years old so maybe we loan him back to FC Copenhagen for this coming season.

Once upon a time when 4-4-2 was the standard, you had 2 CM who went forward and back. They had to be good at both and work well together. Could it be possible to think of Douglas and John as playing a role more similar to that? Rather than thinking of them as specialist DM’s. Or does the forward 4 require them to be heavier on the defensive side?

I think it does, especially as full backs are more like wing backs these days than they were in the 4-4-2 era. I want to see Jack play AM but I also think we need more steel in CM unless SJM can become more like Petrov in his latter playing years.

Alves was undoubtedly crap at Boro but calling the Eredivisie a Mickey Mouse League is a bit silly when you consider all the great players that have started their career there.

There have been plenty of players to come out of Scotland recently who have been of a very high standard, Eduoard is the best forward to have played in the SPL for about 20 years

So the best since Larsson? That may or may not be true (and if he ends up coming here I will certainly hope so) but the list of SPL top scorers in the 7 or 8 years before Edouard doesn’t indicate there is much competition for that title:

Kenny Miller, Gary Hooper, Michael Higdon, Kris Commons, Adam Rooney, Liam Boyce, Leigh Griffiths, Alfredo Morales
