It's shocking how bad they've looked. It wasn't that long ago that I loved watching Ajax play.

They've really picked up in the Eredivisie over the past couple of months.  Their start was so bad they're out of the title race and probably have no chance of qualifying for the Champions League either but they sit currently 5th and just based on results in November and December they've collected more points than anybody else in the Netherlands:

The tragic state of Ajax does bring into questions the mythical billionaire which seem to prioritise the PL, and not a club like Ajax.

Ajax already have a strong brand, huge fanbase, history, Amsterdam. Their youth academy / scouting network is renowned.

You wouldn't need to spend billions, just stop selling their best players each year. If they kept together De Jong, De Light,  Martinez, Kudos, Timber, Alvarez etc they'd have some team!

ties in to the belief that these billionaires treat this clubs as mere play things rather than quietly seeing decent returns on them whilst growing their asset, even our owners will be very quietly doing ok out of villa and should they sell us they will make a pretty profit

the truth is that teams like ajax simply don't generate the returns to make it worthwhile

They also struggle to hold on to their best player's as they can't compete on wages. They can either sell these player's for half decent fees and reinvest that money, or the player's wind their contracts down and leave on a free.

Their highest paid player is apparently Henderson (barf) on €90k a week. That's a pittance to top Premier League teams nowadays.

Look I think bigger picture the dominance of English clubs is not good.

When I was a kid Ajaz were one of the biggest clubs around and the Dutch league the German league the Italian League, the Spanish league were all considered good league sticked with good players.
