Yes of course they should. But they should also be independent. If they are not then it's a slippery slope towards government controlled TV. They already have programmes like Panorama which can investigate all aspects of wrongdoing.

He can say what he wants for all I care, but relating anything to the Nazis is a no no, you can't do this.

There you go again, not reading what others have posted before you (more than once). You will find upthread comments from historians and Germans that explain why the Government rhetoric is exactly like that used by the Nazis in the early 30s.

This isn’t so much an opinion, it’s demonstrably true.

So in your humble opinion, you can’t compare things to the Nazis even when they are just like the Nazis

When refugees were attempting to run for their lives from Nazi Germany, they would often try to cross in to Switzerland. But they would be stopped at the border, and told ‘the boat is full’.

Stop the boats.

Sue Ellen has said there are 100 million refugees heading here and patriots would support here plan to repel them.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, you should definitely mention ducks when describing it.

There is a big fuss because Lineker has a large following.  He has a bigger audience than most, if not all, Tory MPs and their followers.  All that is happening with this big fuss is even more exposure.  The 'backlash' is manufactured and just another attempt at controlling narratives except it just is not working as they hoped now.  He hasn't been fired yet.  Wonder why.  Possibly because he has actually done nothing wrong and could likely shine an even brighter light on government failings.  Over a decade of them.

Ignoring the Andrew Neil comparison for now,  no-one ever complains about Deborah Meaden's tweets and she's very critical of the Government, yet she's on a very popular BBC TV Show. No-one complains about Carol Vorderman's tweets either and she presents on the BBC network too, she's also very critical of the Govt.

But suddenly Lineker gets criticism because... what he said resonates with vast swathes of the population and its shockingly true. WHy shouldn't he be allowed to say it? He's a football pundit, he has opinions, he shouldn't be silenced.

I suspect their thinking runs something along the lines of:

Meaden and Vorderman have a relatively small audience, probably made up of educated middie class people who are either (a) Tory voters who will take no notice, or (b) Guardianistas who wouldn't vote for us anyway.

But Lineker's audience are all those thicko football hooligans, who we've so far cunningly got onside by appealing to their innate xenophobia and racism. We can't have MOTD start making them have doubts about it.

FWIW, I think they probably needn't worry too much. Most of the football fan comments I see (on FB, anyway) are on the lines of "Lineker should shut his gob. He was a shit player anyway", etc.

BBC will not broadcast Attenborough episode over fear of rightwing backlash

The BBC has decided not to broadcast an episode of David Attenborough’s flagship new series on British wildlife because of fears its themes of the destruction of nature would risk a backlash from Tory politicians and the rightwing press, the Guardian has been told.

The decision has angered the programme-makers and some insiders at the BBC, who fear the corporation has bowed to pressure from lobbying groups with “dinosaurian ways”.

The revelation about Attenborough’s programme comes at the end of a week in which another broadcaster, Gary Lineker, has been condemned by Conservative ministers for his criticism of the government’s immigration bill.

The fresh row focuses on Wild Isles, a highly anticipated new series looking at the beauty of nature in the British Isles, which will begin broadcast on Sunday.

Narrated by David Attenborough, it is expected to be a hit, with five episodes scheduled to go out in primetime slots on BBC One.

A sixth episode has also been filmed, which is understood to be a stark look at the losses of nature in the UK and what has caused the declines. It is also understood to include some examples of rewilding, a concept which has been controversial in some rightwing circles.

The documentary, which was part-funded by nature charities the WWF and RSPB, will not be broadcast along with the others and will instead only be available on the BBC’s iPlayer service. All six episodes were narrated by Attenborough, and made by production company Silverback Films, responsible for previous series including Our Planet, in collaboration with the BBC Natural History Unit.
