This year was always going to be hit or miss. The only thing that could have been done better, was to take in two quality loan players in the beginning of the season. Look, I really don't want to sound ungrateful, but without the gift of Liverpool academy, there would be no cup final, sure the leicester game was creditable, 2 good results. Leicester won the league with Ranieri, but next season, he had no sentiment to keep him warm....thats football, The tinker man seemed a very nice guy, great to play for.....The likes of Klopp & Guardiola are not just great at most aspects of the game, we all know that.....they are demanding, they demand, workrate,focus,intensity and physical presence.....its doesn't just come by asking or mentioning it politely.....Its in the managers DNA and it is contagious, players don't naturally like working hard, but they have to get used it, playing for them.....most of the players baulked at Ron Saunders demands, but they all knew deep down that it was leading some somewhere....remember the finger from Morley to the bench in Moscow after he scored that wonder goal.....Morley was not naturally aggressive, so Ron put time in to him, but moreley knew its was being cruel, to be kind. despite my previous post of big name managers, really, I want a tough driving manager, who indoctrinates a work ethic and a fighting spirit in to the players and creates an environment where losing is torture and everyone comes off with muddy shorts, when we do lose, not one or two.(I just feel right now that losing is treated with so much inevitability, not defiance) sadly, I don't think we have the right mentality. Tbf, and I say this as someone who doesn't think he's done enough to keep his job, some stats do suggest that he is. We were the superior team against both Newcastle and Sheffield and if we were just a bit luckier, would've gained all 3 points from both games. Big asterisk on the Sheffield game though due to goal line technology stuff. We have been playing better since the break then before it. But if we're talking about luck, I think it evens out. We played ok against Sheffield United but I don't remember their keeper having too many saves to make. Agreed we are playing better - but still not good enough for a PL side. It's a laughable lineup. Smith was foolish to insist on three up front every game simply because it meant largely having three of these on every game. Early in the season we were "OK".
