The Office and I'm Alan Partridge for me are the gold standard.

Just underneath are Fawlty Towers, Blackadder Goes Fourth, Inbetweeners, Peep Show and The Thick of It.

Highly underrated is Saxondale. Worth watching if you haven't seen it. Coogan at his best.

It's funny how some last the test of time and other don't. I used to think Men Behaving Badly was the best thing ever. It has aged worse than Leslie Ash!

Game On as well as @lapal_fan says. Haven't seen it in a while but doubt it has aged and you would struggle to get away with the content now.

Also a big fan of the sketch shows from that era - Harry Enfield and Chums and The Fast Show.

Fuuu.... i forgot Saxondale!!!!

"Anthromorphology.. what's your opinion on it?"

"Nope.. I've got a blind spot bigger than the Ghobi Desert here.."

"Snorting lines of the devil's dandruff"

I absolutely love it and it's SO underrated!!

Good choices. You forgot Pheonix Nights, Father Ted, The Day Today,  People Like Us, W1A...and probably some more.

For shame I’ve only watched Father Ted of those you’ve mentioned

off course i did forget Not the nine o’clock news from my list , great topical humour , which might make it dated now ?  I doubt someone now  would understand the Hand built by Roberts gag without being familiar with the original advert for example

As I said in the other thread, I'm not the biggest fan of TV comedy, but if forced to chose, I'd go with:

Sketch format: Python, The Fast Show, A Bit of Fry and Laurie

Sitcoms: Father Ted, Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers

Improv: Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Have I Got News For You, Q.I.

Stand-up: Billy Connolly... (struggling to think of any others)

Extended format: The Comic Strip Presents...

Whose Line is it Anyway is a great show.

controversially I much prefer the American version though, the run where Drew Carey was the host.

Scrolling through the suggestions so far, my hitcount reads:

Ones where I saw one episode or less, and didn't like:

Red Dwarf
The Office
Anything with Vic and Bob
Only Fools and Horses
The Detectorists
Yes Minister
The New Statesman

Ones I've never seen at all:

Spaced
The I.T. Crowd
Black Books
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
Game On
Inbetweeners
Mighty Boosh
Two Pints of Lager
The Thick of It
Saxondale
Phoenix Nights
League of Gentlemen
People Like Us
W1A
Gavin and Stacey
Max & Paddy's Road To Nowhere
Fresh Meat
Early Doors
The Thin Blue Line
Bo Selecta

EDIT: This isn't a generational thing, either. I never liked Steptoe, Porridge, all that lot.

@mjmooney Off your 'never seen' list I would definitely recommend checking out the IT crowd and Black Books in particular. I thought it was quite telling that 3 of my Top Ten are written by Graham Linehan (of Father Ted fame).

Nah. I'm sure they're good (I did like Father Ted), but it just seems like a waste of time watching TV comedy.
