Ukrainian air defences don't seem to have been up to much, really, even if they've scored a few hits. That looks a little too intact for a helicopter that's been blasted out of the sky? Can't Ukraine just surround them and keep them pinned in, continue to provide resistance where Russia is weak and shoot down as much of their low flying combat gunships as possible? Russia will need a LARGE force to keep Ukraine occupied. Yes, it's a huge deal! It's a bridgehead through which to land troops right next to the capital. Does Ukraine have the manpower to 'keep them pinned in', given they now appear to be fighting on at least four fronts? You are probably right about needing a large force to keep Ukraine occupied, but that comes after the fall of the legitimate government of the country, which now seems like a real risk in fairly short order. Nah, the new age stinger technology is meant to cripple aircrafts, they don't carry a massive payload. This is also why they're so good when fighting a force like Russia, you can easily hide them, go to an opening and fire a rocket, then disperse. It takes two people, one with the aiming system and one to fire.

Rodders
This seems like an open and shut case of Putin = baddy, like a certain Austrian. The sudetenland went in 2014. When does the West actually orchestrate a proper response? Even if it's the complete isolation of Russia from every facet of life. Empty homes and assets seized, rich **** kicked out, sports people and teams banned from competitions etc? Unfair on the odd individual I know, but do we ever actually respond with anything substantial or is just try not to look like we're bending over? HanoiVillan
One thing this country actually could do, as a practical measure that we are fully in control of, is announce a wide-ranging acceptance of Ukrainians arriving here as asylum seekers. When asked about this last week, Liz Truss said there was no plan to do any such thing. Have the Tories changed their minds on that?

mjmooney Posted February 24, 2022 VT Supporter Share Posted February 24, 2022 Addressing Ukrainians directly, Johnson says: "We’re with you, we’re praying for you and your families." That's OK, then.

Davkaus
What's the best outcome we can hope for realistically? Either the west is at war with Russia, which could really just be The End, or we give them the green light to invade any region it sees fit to, as long as it isn't in NATO? Except that Putin is a massive sports fan, it'll hurt his pride immensely. Move anything relating to sports, activities etc out of Russia and don't let him back in until he gives back all the territories.

There isn't really a good outcome to cheer for. Any direct confrontation with Russia is off the table, so the latter was true before and is proven true today. Probably the best outcome, though obviously highly highly highly unlikely, is the emergence of an anti-war sentiment amongst the Russian public that is significant enough to pose a threat to the government. I wouldn't hold my breath, but that's about it.
