Scott Sinclair

I've read a lot of people saying he should be our striker, some even saying he should play up top on his own.

I really dont see it. He doesnt have anywhere near the strength to hold the ball up under significant pressure and bring others into the game.

I could maybe see him working in a 4-4-2 playing with a more dominant player. However I really see him as what he is and has bene doing a (predominantly) wide forward who will drop deep link up play but also get himself into good positions in the box at the right time. Add to that he also carries the ball well and he is a great assett.

I think he is more seen as a poacher considering most of Sinclair's goals have him just being in the right spot to put it in.

I agree that his game is not suited to playing up on his own.  His effectiveness would be massively compromised if centrebacks could treat him as a regular striker and isolate him in that way.  He's better off having a foil ahead of him so he can sneak about the place.  Which is why I think he'd be best in a free role behind a central striker.

Off to the left and drifting in allowing Grealish freedom of the town. IMO.

So how many league goals do we think he'll score this season? I'm gonna go for 9.

From what I can recall off the top of my head Clark has scored:

2 against Arsenal home in 10/11
1 against Chelsea away in 10/11
1 against Bristol Rovers away in 11/12
1 against Spurs home 11/12
1 against Newcastle away 12/13
1 against Leicester home 14/15

Funnily enough, I've seen 4 of those in person and I only go to about 8 games or so a season.

You must be Rain man to recall 7 Clark goals and the opponents off the top of your head.

It's called having a good memory. ;)

Actually I've no problem with the more attacking mids all interchanging.  They have the ability.  Perhaps Adama is more specialised, but the likes of Grealish, Sinclair and Gil could give defenders nightmares with their positional changes.  I'd also be fairly confident it's what Tim wants to see from them.

Yeah sure. See I happen to think Sinclair isn't an attacking mid at all. I see him as an outside forward, working the channels and making those deadly diagonal runs between the right back and the centre half into central areas in the 6 yard box.

I don't think he has the creativity to play a more central number 10 role in a conventional sense and I don't think he'd be nearly as effective running in from there.

Totally agree there should be a freedom of a sort, I guess what I mean is that his heat map should refect that of a left side outside forward!

I had as feeling he would score some goals this year, but have to admit that I thought he would drop out of the team when our flair players came back to fitness. If we play 4-4-2, I assumed the strikers would be 2 from Gabby, Ayew, Rudy and Kozak, and Sinclair would be competing with Grealish for left wing, and there is only one winner there (or is there....)

However, given the last week, and the fact he scored plenty of goals in pre-season, I just don't see how we can leave him out of the team. I think his form is the reason why we won't see Grealish, Gil and Adama all playing together, because the left wing/forward spot is now Sinclair's to lose. I can't see us playing Sinclair up front, as the reason he is finding space is that the main striker e.g. Gestede is keeping the centre backs busy.

Next game will be Sinclair, Grealish and Adama behind Gestede I think.

Sinclairs effectiveness scoring goals is, in part, down to him either getting into the box late if he's dropped back or attacking the far post when the winger on the other side is going to put the ball in, playing him centrally would stop him being in those positions.

For all the talk of finally having players playing in their natural positions plenty of people seem happy with taking one of our biggest goalscoring threats at the moment and playing him out of position! Forcing him to play centrally would likely see him score less goals and be more of a burden on the team

Hes scoring goals as a left wing forward and that's where he should play at the minute, I can't see him playing as a striker as it's a totally different role which requires a totally different skill set

Agreed also, he's the most natural finisher that we have in my opinion, he has to be utilised, excellent player I think

Given Sinclair's current purple patch...  he cannot be out of the 1st11 right now in my opinion.  I'm assuming TS will ride the hot player(s) all season- and thats how we will get our goals.  Frankly, I like that strategy.  (We have many players capable of going on a purple patch and going on a scoring run).

If we play a 442 <> formation I can see Sinclair up top on the left side with a target man like Gestede or Kozak on the right.  If we play 433 or 4231 he will play on the left out wider cutting in and finding the openings that he is has that knack for doing.

Assuming he stays healthy- Sinclair is good for 10-12 goals this season for us.  He can replace over half of Benteke's goals by himself.  Not bad for such little money outlay!

UTV!

Is that what I call, to my son's pitying looks, an inside left?

Don't worry, I have read the inverted pyramid so I know what you mean! I would say so yes, without really knowing exactly how an inside left would play, it sounds like the impression I have in my head.

For all you youngsters.

Back in the day we had 5 forwards, 3 half backs, 2 full backs, 1 goalie.

Forwards:  outside left; inside left; centre forward; inside right; outside right

Midfielders:  left half; centre half; right half

Centre backs:  left back; right back

Keeper:  goalie

No subs;  if you get injured, you man up and keep playing.

No extra time; playing for time was an accepted art form.

Offside; simple, no grey area.

Half time; couple of segments of orange and a cigarette.

Happy days. :)  :)  :)
