Popular Post TrentVilla Posted June 5, 2014 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted June 5, 2014 There is a lot of negativity towards this signing (he should sign today or tomorrow I'm told), I can't though help but feel that much of it is a reflection upon the current circumstances of the club and the slog that has been the last 4 years the prospect of another tough season isn't one any of us relish. In an ideal world, or the cash rich one O'Neill enjoyed we would probably sign better... or then again, perhaps we'd pay £16m for two CB's, stick one at RB and the other in the reserves... I digress... My point is, that whatever people think of Senderos, and most don't seemingly think a lot, he isn't shit. This is a player who has, what is it? 60 odd international caps has played for AC Milan, Arsenal and Valencia and is about to head off to Brazil for his 3rd World Cup. Now he might not be Martin Laursen but I think its very over the top to say he is shit. Would Lambert like to be in a position to sign better? No doubt. I think he would be the first to admit he would have signed Lescott before Senderos if he were able to do so but the wages would just not make that an option. Lambert has presumably got the best player available for the budget available or at least the best player in his view. Trust me there isn't a chance Senderos is going to be on anything even remotely close to 50k as I've seen suggested. If fit I fully expect Vlaar and Okore to be our starting partnership, then as first option behind them we will have Senderos rather than Clark or Baker. Personally that is good news as far as I'm concerned. Last season we conceded more than any other team that stayed up, something has to change regardless of the circumstances with a takeover, hopefully Okore and Senderos can make some sort of impact on that. Yes I know people will say they rather the manager changed and/or the owner but right now neither of those things are happening so we are where we are. Last season we conceded a lot of soft goals, a lot of goals where we just needed someone to put a foot or a head in. And we conceded too many goals in quick succession when heads dropped due to confidence or inexperience. One of our biggest issues last season I felt with our defense was the lack of a voice. Remember when we used to have CB's that screamed at those around them? Been a while since we've seen that hasn't it. Vlaar is a leader but in a different way, he isn't vocal, he isn't a shouter and he doesn't tell those around him what to do. The only voice we have back there is Guzan, whatever Senderos' limitations, and like all players he does have them, he is a very vocal defender, always has been and I believe Okore is the same. I think that will help us and help the players in both the defense and midfield. So while Senderos might not be the sort of signing people want, I think it is the sort of signing we need and quite probably the best we can hope for in the current climate. It is a sad reflection of the club and just adds to the fans frustrations. I just hope hes not Vlaar's replacement. If Vlaar stays.. Will Baker be sent out on loan? Obviously he believes we need shoring up and the minimal money we do have should not be spent on CB, as we already have Okore and Vlaar. Should be looking at the midfield to improve. Heard we signed Senderos - went straight on to AVFC and renewed my season ticket. And then I went straight onto the Club website and bought full home kit... with Senderos '27' and the Premier League patches too. Was out of his depth and looked like he did at fulham. Extremely average. Very similar to Baker, strong but very error prone and slow. Surely, thus, there is a reason he has played in the Premier League for 9 seasons? I'm not saying he's the best player in the world, but players not good enough at this level get found out and left behind - they don't stick around for 9 seasons (10 now!). If a new owner doesn't come in before the new season and we signed absolutely nobody, fans would be up in arms. Any bad player can have occasional "decent spells" (as you put it) in the same way that very good players suffer the obligatory dips in form every so often. Nathan Baker has had a couple of "decent spells" over the last two seasons too but that doesn't change the fact that overall, he is an utter liability and not good enough to play at this level. What winds me up is when people are coming to the conclusion that he "can't be that bad" based on the flawed logic of who he happened to play for or in your case how long he played in the league rather than his actual performances throughout his career. Though I digress, the usual convenient short-term memory has clearly come to the fore in which him being a complete joke figure amongst Arsenal fans and just last season being let go by a team with the worst defence in the league have been airbrushed. I'm almost 100% confident that most people haven't watched much of Philippe Senderos. This goes for most players in the Premier League that are just in that "meh" sort of field - outside of Villa, most people won't have watched much of Ciaran Clark, Karim El Ahmadi, Leandro Bacuna etc. etc. It's just the way it goes. But if stats are anything to go by... ...before Senderos left Fulham, they had conceeded 50 goals in the league at a rate of 2.17 per game, including a 6-0 loss against Hull (their heaviest defeat of the season) in which Senderos didn't play. After he left, they conceeded 35 goals in the league at a rate of 2.33 per game. Before Senderos joined, Valencia had conceeded 35 goals in the league at a rate of 1.52 per game. After he joined, they conceeded 18 goals at a rate of 1.2 per game. Just a coincidence?
