Philippe Senderos

Sun was shining this morning and I finished my week of on call with work. Fantastic, joyous end to the week on offer then.

Heard we signed Senderos - went straight on to AVFC and renewed my season ticket. And then I went straight onto the Club website and bought full home kit... with Senderos '27' and the Premier League patches too.

Can't wait for August now.

And you did all this based on what evidence?

look for the final word in font size 2 at the bottom of his post  ;)

And they were relegated after he left - maybe they should have kept him?! :)

And yet, in the midst of the relegation battle that eventually sank them, they still didn't feel like he'd be of any use.

Just like they got rid of Berbatov and spent 15million on an unproven striker. Really wouldn't use Fulhams management as an example.

Berbatov is a hopeless example. He had told the club he didn't want to play for them at that point, and was basically on a go-slow. Senderos was trying, he just wasn't good enough.

Like pointed out in a post above, their defence got worse without him. Keeping a go slow Berbatov who killed us in December lets not forget, would have been a better bet that the signing they made.

I'm almost 100% confident that most people haven't watched much of Philippe Senderos. This goes for most players in the Premier League that are just in that "meh" sort of field - outside of Villa, most people won't have watched much of Ciaran Clark, Karim El Ahmadi, Leandro Bacuna etc. etc. It's just the way it goes.

The way it goes for you maybe. The status of a player doesn't actually affect how much you see of them though. For example, if someone has watched Benteke enough to make a judgement of him, then by the same process they must have watched his teammates playing also. All teams in the league make the TV games every few weeks so there are plenty of opportunities to watch them all.

But if stats are anything to go by...

...before Senderos left Fulham, they had conceeded 50 goals in the league at a rate of 2.17 per game, including a 6-0 loss against Hull (their heaviest defeat of the season) in which Senderos didn't play. After he left, they conceeded 35 goals in the league at a rate of 2.33 per game.

Before Senderos joined, Valencia had conceeded 35 goals in the league at a rate of 1.52 per game. After he joined, they conceeded 18 goals at a rate of 1.2 per game.

Just a coincidence? Obviously he missed games at both clubs, I can't be bothered to go into that level of detail though ;)

Well perhaps you should've gone into a bit more detail regarding Valencia and acquainted yourself with their season as you then would've known that they had a poor first-half of the season which resulted in Dukic being sacked in December. He was replaced by Pizzi and they improved henceforth.

Senderos himself only started 7 league games, so I'm not sure why you think you can get away with crediting him with such improvement. Not to mention that during his 7 starts they conceded 9 goals (1.23/game) whereas the during the games he didn't start while there, they conceded 11 in 10 games (1.1/game). Here's one for you though, after his arrival they lost only 5 games and his started in 4 (out of 7 starts) of those losses.

Regarding Fulham, I was more trying to make the point that he was involved with the worst defence in the division last season. Not that the methodology of your stats is correct as you should divide it between games with him actually playing and games without him playing. In which case they conceded 2.17/game with him and 2.27/game without him. So basically they were the worst defence in the division when he played and still the worst defence in the division when he didn't, albeit even slight worser. Still not sure how that reflects well on him when they were still leaking over 2 goals a game with him in the team.

Actually, it made almost no difference. They conceded 2.17 goals per game when he played, and 2.27 when he didn't. That second statistic would be lower than the first if it weren't for the Hull game.

He's joined so these stats are meaningless now.
