trekka Posted May 14, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted May 14, 2015 So I've been working in my new job (in the same organisation but I've been away on secondment for 4 years) for 4 days. I love it. The atmosphere is amazing, they are a sociable bunch and I'm really being given a lot of support as it is a new role (not just for me but for work too). It's nice to have my home back and I think I definitely took the right move (I posted earlier that I was offered another job in the same place - the senior chap who I was almost working for even walked past, shook my hand and patted me on the back saying I've done the right thing). Had a couple of interviews with one company with a view to shifting to something a little different, which have gone well I think and been told they wanted a decision made on Friday. Heard nothing. Which is a bit annoying. I also have a chat lined up with a very well respected person following a recommendation, but whatever they might offer is likely to have issues putting me off it... But would represent a simple move and potentially more. Could be an interesting week. If both avenues open it's potentially a difficult choice that all being well could develop in the coming days. One is a step up in status, and cash, but would push my work in a different direction, not one I feel completely comfortable with right now, but would also broaden my horizons significantly. The other would likely keep me on the same path, broaden it slightly, and have a good environment with a very respected group around me, but is currently awkward for me to get to the office, likely to be on a temporary basis to begin with no guarantee it'll develop, and no idea what pay would entail. Or neither come off and I'm left where I am on a skip heading dangerously close to the rocks, and where I wasn't happy before it all started going wrong. Or a set flat rate per building design? its done by the square metre. if you have a lot of cutting on a roof, especially hips then the money goes up quite a bit. our firm dont pay you what you should get for the cutting though and we dont get paid for fitting the velux window kits and cutting around them. they say we do but i know for a fact we dont. all the ridges and verges is in with the price. Kingman Posted May 18, 2015 Share Posted May 18, 2015 (edited) When i was on the trowel a few years ago the prices were sound, Everything had a price from m2 on the blockwork to per 1000 on the face work. Even the the insulation, fixed ties, DPC etc had there own individual price. Then the recession came along and it went proper shite with everything included in the lift price, the barons got proper greedy with the daywork, took the piss as not much work about and hardly anything was being built so expected your fingertips to bleed for £90 a shift. House bumping and commercial developments are at its highest now for a number years leaving major shortage in trades men as a result of the recession, Thousands left the industry because they couldn't survive on 2-3-4 day weeks, thousands have retired and hardly any apprentices have come through to fill the voids over the last 6/7 years, From what I'm hearing now though prices have gone back to something like pre-recession if not better and everybody's weekend millionaires again. Rugeley Villa Posted May 18, 2015 Share Posted May 18, 2015 yeah prices have gone back up, especially the brickies and things are looking a lot better. last year we were flat out and i was working most weekends which i hated but its one of those things. this year looks the same although im cutting down my weekend work as im fed up of it ruling my life, spending time with the kids and enjoying myself is more important. in terms of young lads coming through most of them are no good and get paid shit money, in our trade anyway. ive been on and off price work for the last few years,i get pissed off with getting messed around so much that i tell my boss im going back on day rate which is normally 100 a day but last time round i got him up to 120. hopefully things go ok for a bit. yeah the recession really screwed things up with the prices and it took a few years to get over it. Kingman Posted May 18, 2015 Share Posted May 18, 2015 (edited) Yeah Brickies are usually the first to feel the pinch then the first to pick up then the other trades follow on, If no houses get built then it has a major knock on effect to the internal trades, Chippys, Sparkys, Plasterers, Painters, Roofers, Scaffolders and all of the suppliers etc. Every dog has its day so they say, Its come back round full circle where demand out weighs the supply chain so if the lads are any good then the Trades can now pretty much name there rate within reason compared to a few years ago "Thats the rate, take it or leave it" Talking to a pal of mine over the weekend who is a rep for a large building merchants and reckons there is a 3-6 month wait for bulk Brick & Block orders as they can't make the bricks quick enough. Had that chat and that went very differently to how I expected, and if he can deliver what I hope I've no idea what I'm going to do. The other role wants me to have decided by Friday but are seemingly desperate for me to join, the other guy I chatted with for the other company might not be able to put anything in front of me by then as well as may not be able to deliver regardless. Now the thing is, the job is 100 times better that what I am doing now, and in an area that I want to specialize in, likely too that once I finish the specialist exams that I'd climb up the payroll pretty fast. I'm basically in a tiny firm in Kerry with no prospects but I did very well in my exams was top ten in the world in one so got an interview with a fairly large company, imagine moving from non-league to Spurs, but I basically have zero experience in what they want me to do but I can't stay doing what I am doing or I'll go insane, they've assured me they are getting me in to get me up the ladder asap but I'll be working hard for it. The other side is I'd have to move 100km up the country and that extra €50 would come in handy for the new car I want.
