OutByEaster? Posted March 24, 2022 Moderator Share Posted March 24, 2022 Wow. The stats on the Italy game are incredible - knocked out of the World Cup by North Macedonia. It's some upset.
Johnnyp
This will go down worse than 2018. That was once in a lifetime, this will never happen again kinda stuff. Not been flippant and trivialising mental health but people could off themselves in Italy over this. 2 in a row. Wow.
MachoFantastico
Full credit to North Macedonia. Italy looked so poor, not to mention wasteful in front of goal. Second World Cup they miss in a row, hard to believe. I think Italian football needs to take a long hard look at itself. There's a bunch of Italian players in that team who don't deserve to be playing international football in my opinion.

If they got dumped out of the group stages then fair enough, beat quality sides and won it. Form lines wouldn’t suggest this was on the cards. Quality throughout their lineup. This was bottle job of seismic proportions
VillaChris
Italy's record is bizarre since they last won world cup in 2006: 2010- Finished bottom of group that included Slovakia and New Zealand. 2014- Lost to Costa Rica and went out of groups. 2018 and 2022- Don't even qualify. But you'd still expect them to be major threat at next euros. Incredible achievement from North Macedonia to be one game away from making next world cup. They're a bit like Burnley at international level, tricky team to play home and away but think Portugal will be too much. Annoying Turkey couldn't score that penalty as Portugal were really flagging late on in the game. Have to say really enjoy these one off matches, much more interesting than two legs when sometimes both teams can be defensive in the first game. Now it's all on the night.

Their midfield is still quality though in right circumstances so I wouldn't right them off for 2024 if a decent striker emerges in next two years. Southgate will certainly be happy they won't be in Qatar as always a bad match up for England.

They are really exciting, this format. If this was a 2 leg thing Italy would probably go to Macedonia and win 2 or 3 nil in the return.
Zatman
People also criticised UEFA for allowing lower nations qualify for Euros through Nations League and North Macedonia was from the lower tier. Obviously developed well, beat Germany in Germany recently
The_Rev
The last time Italy won a knockout game at the World Cup was the 2006 final. Even that was on penalties.
Tom13
Still a huge ask but the Macedonians won't half have some momentum behind them for the Portugal game now.

Fair point. The window between the 2 games is so narrow. If it was 2 weeks of a gap there would be no way they could sustain that high and adrenaline that’s going through them now.

The next game could be interesting, Wales one knockout game from being in the World Cup could potentially have to play… Ukraine. Head of the FAW has asked if there isn’t any way Ukraine could just be given some sort of bye. Wales fans last night:
