I think it's a way to try and keep costs down instead if inviting the full class which I can understand. However they could have made an exception.

My worry is this becomes a trend with single sex parties. He's a fairly quiet kid and more into doing quiet/imaginative/art play then running around like a loon and as such whilst he's friends with other boys he's not best friends with any of them.

He's only young though and suspect a lot will change in the next few years.

It helps that me and my Mrs both don't like full class parties. I don't think the eldest got one but her birthday is in August so it's a bit of a minefield who can make it. The youngest had one last year for her 5th while in reception but we won't do a full one this year, just a few friends. The one we did do compared with others was pretty good as we had a magician who entertained them too, puppet, disco, balloon animals. We just had to sort food and drink. He even kept the adults amused and a decent gift for our daughter. Some we've attended (probably cost more than ours) have been awful, lost the attention of the kids which just creates a free for all and the gift for the birthday boy at the weekend was a plastic medal.

On the parties theme this is a new entry from yesterday.

My daughter is 10 and finishes year 6 in July before starting high school in September.

Some of the parents have taken it upon themselves to arrange a party… but they’ve gone full US style prom. It’s expensive, runs till 11pm on a Friday night, red carpet, cars, dresses, sweets, buyable merch like hoodies the lot… for a group of 10 year olds finishing primary school.

It really pisses me off. Of course she wants to go and we won’t stop her but it will be causing all kinds of trouble for many families I expect. And the venue they’ve booked is right across the other side of town too.

So many people will be really hard up but then they get unnecessary shit like this where they’ll have to either stump up the needed cash, or look like the poor families and face embarrassment.

2 years ago when my son left primary school the school put on a little disco on the last day with food/sweets and they al had a great time. The school offered to do it again but a group of mums decided it wasn’t extravagant enough.

I really hope it fails miserably (and they do what the school has aways done).

So you made an assumption, you were incorrect in that assumption but it's someone else's fault you were wrong. Sorry but that's how that comes across.

I think you need to chill, that guy making a phone call sitting in his car, could have been calling a family member to say his wife, son, is still very ill. Petrol station etc I can understand, hospital carpark, you may not be being very considerate yourself.

I agree. I sometimes get back to a pay and display car park, with a coffee, and I just want to sit in my car for a bit, drink my coffee and recover from actually having to interact with people face to face!

Stuck in a hotel in frankfurt for a the month which should be enough for this thread, I hate this life, there's 6 of us here from work, the other 5 move out next week to apartments in the city, they go to the restaurant every night, 5 things on the menu, 22€ for a burger and beer so I don't I go in the gym and then eat cold food in my room and watch German TV which at least I've got sky and the PL channel

Cos they're leaving I though **** it tonight I'll go to the restaurant then watch the football in the bar...

Frankfurt Airport is broken, 160 cancelled flights, lufthansa are using my hotel in the emergency so the restaurant is packed and they've put a buffet on instead, the buffet is **** garbage, the hotel bar doesn't have sky even when the rooms do and worst of all the frankfurt beer which I've been looking forward to the whole time is shite, maybe the first bad beer I've had in years of living here

2 weeks holed up in my room then, I'm not doing that again

Sounds like the beginning of a detective novel ... and also like the beginning of Apocalypse Now.

Maybe this is an American thing, but people at restaurants who say they'll "do" items on the menu. "OK, right, I'll do some guac and I'll do some carne asada and I'll do some pico de gallo."

I don't know why, but it ****-ing drives me bonkers.

Its very similar to people who get in a cab and say "Can I have Hanover Street."

I dunno, how rich are you

See also travelling: "Yeah I've done Thailand, think I'm going to do Vietnam next."

Sounds like checking it off a bloody list, which quite often is probably the case. You're not doing it, you're going there and experiencing and enjoying supposedly.
