Leandro Bacuna

I can never make my mind up about this guy, on form he can be immense, and defensively he has played very well at times this season, but today his delivery was completely off the boil and his defensive performance was absolutely shocking, he was getting caught completely out of position multiple times in the first half today.

Ultimately I think we need better at right back, Trippier IMO would be a good shout, looked a much better player than Bacuna today.

I really want us to sign Trippier too, he'll be off to Southampton though to replace Clyne i think.

Him and Robertson have both been relegated and are two of the best full backs in the league. Get them in!

I felt for Bacuna yesterday, was so isolated, reminded me of Lambert's no winger and Hutton sprinting forward and beating two men "tactic", a right back really needs support and is not able to do everything himself, Bacuna was forced to do everything on our right side. Although his crossing yesterday was abysmal.

Indeed, we were far too narrow and multiple time he was stranded on the right with the ball, Cleverley wasn't giving him any movement and he lacks a trick to beat a man down the right hand side, so he was running into dead ends most of the time.

However when he did get opportunities to cross, his delivery was poor, and his positioning from a defensive standpoint was even worse. Certainly a candidate to be replaced. I think he's a good squad player but I'm not convinced he's consistent or good enough to be a regular.

But this the same player that has had a few assists for benteke (that cross against saints was spot on) without those assists we wouldn't have got the points maybe. I like the guy. His attitude is spot on -asked to play in various positions and does so and tries his best . Might not be good enough for some on here (as is normal). But when he does cross the ball well it is spot on and has been for the goals that resulted. Can't say for sure whether anyone else could have done better for all those assists (not many assists granted) but they helped us to maintain our status on the top flight.

Just being able to cross the ball isn't enough though Naz, definitely not in the current game. He's not defensively solid, he's prone to errors and doesn't make good decisions.

Same was said about Clark. And Baker. And, to a lesser extent, even Vlaar.

He's not yet had an extensive run in the side. Give him some time and he'll get better, imo.

Firstly, they're all CBs and are clearly defined as such. Bacuna hasn't really made any position his own because his skillset doesn't really suit any position.

Secondly, Clark and Baker had this said about them despite showing potential to grow into the role and young CBs make errors, it's how they learn. Anyone saying the above about Vlaar, at best, was/is just plain wrong.

I haven't seen any performance from Bacuna that says to me that he can be a good enough first choice Right Back for us. I think his best position is probably as a RM, seeing as his crossing is good.

I dunno. I think in games like Man City, Tottenham, Liverpool in the FA cup he showed that he can play that position well.

Granted it's not his natural position - he's a bit of an all rounder rather than a specialist - but that just gives me more reason to think he can grow into it. He's 23 and there is room to learn.

Lex mate my post was a response to someone saying he has to go cos he can't cross and is not good enough. My response without his assists benteke would not have got those goals we may not have got the points and may have been relegated. I know it's maybes but who's to say . Just think people forget things sometimes when putting a point across. He's not brilliant but for what he cost and more importantly sherwood likes him. Played out of position but does his job when asked. I think he's had more good games than bad. But what the f**l do I know Edited by nazvfc

He's done a good job in most of his appearances, and I do appreciate his versatility and, just as important, his willingness to be flexible about his position. As a squad player, in and out of the first team in various places, no problem. But I agree with lexicon that he makes too many errors in the penalty area to be a solid long-term option at right-back.

I quite agree. I said last season that if he specialised in the FB position he could become a top player, and I still believe that. There is still plenty of room for improvement, but I don't think he is defensively much worse than Hutton at this point.

We should try to make him into a proper full back. We typically look better with him in the team. If he improved his defense, he could be a very very good right back.

That sounds quite a lot like 'if my aunty had balls she'd be my uncle'.
