Awol
Impeachment requires a 2/3rds majority in Congress and the only outcome - even if successful - is removal from office. He'll be gone before this process even plays out, it's pure political theatre.

Isn't it also about proving that there are consequences and stopping him from running for office again.

This word removed has acted like he's the emperor of the United States for too **** long. I was just thinking about this theme of "there's not enough time", "it will make a martyr of him to his followers", "it will consume and distract from the first few months of Biden's Presidency" I understand all that, but I keep coming back to the fact that HE SHOULD NOT GET AWAY WITH IT. He absolutely SHOULD be held account for his actions. If a President can't be impeached for what he has done then what is the point? He absolutely should be made an example of and blow the consequences. He has tried to usurp democracy and the message needs to be sent out that this will NOT be tollerated. When you take a step back and look what happened, not just at Capitol Hill but in the months leading up to it it would actually be quite shocking if nothing was done about it. And they also need to wheedle out all the other politicians who have been encouraging hate, there should be no allowance for that in a public servant. 4

The only way that makes sense is if the impeachment process can be completed after he has already left office (can it??) and the 2/3rds majority can be achieved. That means a lot of Republican politicians having a Come to Jesus moment.
Davkaus
Too add to @bickster it should be pointed out that those are the potential outcomes of a conviction which is what requires the 2/3 majority. He is already an impeached president, and I believe this will make him the first to ever be impeached twice. 15 minutes ago, mjmooney said: I'm slightly surprised that you knew about the sack of Nanking, but not Kristallnacht. I did know of it, to be fair, I just wasn't familiar with the German word for it, I'd only heard of the name "Night of the broken glass". In the previous impeachment vote, their voters would be solidly behind a vote in Trump's favour so there would be no political fallout. This time whichever way they vote, they'd be pissing off half of their voters*. Not to the extent that they will vote in favour, but if it loses them a few thousand votes then that's still a useful thing. *given around half of Republicans think the Capitol incident was good and half think it was bad

bickster Posted January 11, 2021 Moderator Share Posted January 11, 2021 Apparently, even if removed from office, he gets to keep his Secret Service Detail now. He can thank Obama for that, for it was he who signed the order that changed the 1958 Former Presidents Act

The talk is it will be held later in the year (at a time of Pelosi’s choosing). Edited January 11, 2021 by LondonLax

Davkaus
And if his golf trips are any indication, he would spend every single cent of that $1m per year at Trump resorts.
