Football Federation Australia insists, however, that this has nothing to do with the 24-year-old West Australian’s international allegiences. Herd, who has not yet played for Australia, is also eligible to play for Scotland.

Jeonbuk Motors centre-back Alex Wilkinson, also uncapped, comes into the squad in London ahead of the friendly with Ecuador at The Den on Thursday morning (EDT) for another chance to impress Ange Postecoglou. The 29-year-old, who plays in South Korea, was part of the squad that faced Costa Rica last year.

“We have been made aware that Chris will be unavailable for selection at club level until further notice as he works through some personal issues and we will respect that and have replaced him in the squad for the Ecuador game,” Postecoglou said.

“That presents another opportunity for Alex Wilkinson to come into the camp. He did well in the camp in Sydney last November when we played Costa Rica and he has a chance to put his best foot forward, like everyone else, in relation to World Cup selection.”

Herd has been struggling with hamstring injuries for some time, but as one of the few Australians in the Premier League, was selected by Postecoglou for this squad despite his lack of recent football.

Any body got any news or updates regarding Chris? I really rate this guy & would love to have him playing along side Vlaar in Central Defence in either a back 3, 4 or 5? Especially so now, as we need players to pull their fingers out, stand up & be counted & put in some big performances to get us safely over the line.

We could also do with his steel in Central Midfield too. Really wished he was available for selection. :(
