You wouldn't like them

File in the same box as The Killers and all those bands

Not too far off the mark with the killers. mancunian Indie-electro i guess describes them. Definitely some killers/ editors / early new order / joy division influences although they have been around for nearly 10 years now. This is their third album, Standard release on red vinyl, they yellow/black marble vinyl comes signed & is a website exclusive. Would take a pic of the actual disc but it seems my wife missed the delivery so it is stuck at the sorting office until Tuesday now :(

They are getting bigger thanks to some good support slots (James in particular) but they are still playing small venues for their own shows, outside of manchester at least (slade rooms in wolves next week)

The new Alex Turner record under his alias 'Arctic Monkeys'

It's interesting and is going to need a deep dive and several listens. It's basically Turner in full on lounge singer mode, with the rest of the band doing a good job of not contributing that much.

There are going to be a lot of unhappy AM fans out there though.

Arctic monkeys

Its going to divide opinions thats for sure, hard first listen, its incredibly dense so thr lyrics dont jump out at you straight away, id also say that AM for me personally as a 33 year old spending my 20s with them they are probably the most lyrically on point band ive ever listened to so the new direction is a bit puzzling, im not actually sure what this album is about, its not a concept album its just a bit out there somewhere, also the talents of the rest of the band have fallen away, still on the 1st listen i thought there were 2/3 good tracks on there

Then you add in to that alex turner is an utter cock and whereas it didnt before at times on this album it comes through and this definitely isnt a album that is going to blow me away when they start playing it live in a stadium that ive paid £75 for a ticket, not sure how this will play live

I think by the end of the weekend ill appreciate it for what it is rather than being disappointed by what its not

It is a concept album.

It's based around a hotel on the moon, frequented by various characters and employees.

Each song is a narrative from one of their varying perspectives.

I'm on about my 8th listen, but haven't been concentrating all the time.

I've had to put the fact it's an 'Arctic Monkeys' album to one side, because it isn't one, not in the traditional sense anyway.

it has a hidden musical depth to it and some of the songs are goregeous, but I'm not sure where it will sit in the longer term.

As a long term AM fan, it's hard  not to be initially disappointed with the complete lack of bangers, or even a chorus somewhere would have been nice.

It took balls the size of king kong's to release this though and for that, I salute them.

I think I've found a chorus on the AM album :hooray:

"Good afternoon, Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino, Mark speaking, please tell me how I can direct your call"

I can see 20k fans in an arena belting that one back in a mass singalong.

I'm picking up a couple of things on Monday that I'm convinced you'll love.

It'll be the bridge in the middle ground that finally persuades you that we should exchange mix tapes.

I haven't, but I'm not surprised.

I like it and listening to it with headphones really made a difference,    It's a great piece of music, just not an AM album.

Reminds me a bit of Pet Sounds to be honest.

over hyped shite with one passable track?

Ha, yes I suppose that will be the case for some.

There is no doubt this is a product of Turner's pretentious side. He manages to pull it off for the most part, if you're prepared to give it a few spins. A lot of people won't get past one listen though and you can't really blame them.

Pretty sure the only time I've ever heard anything by the Arctic Monkeys was on the 2012 Olympics ceremony, when they did that "Dancefloor" thing, and the Beatles' "Come Together". They seemed OK. I'm quite intrigued by the descriptions of this new album, sounds like they're being proper musicians with ideas, rather than just pandering to their fans' expectations.

I'd give it a go if I were you. I like the AM in a '3am sing-along' kind of way, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the new album.

Give it a spin, see what you think.

A lot of people who would normally dismiss them will like this, equally a lot people that like them will hate it.

It's a complete departure and I can't think of anything else out there like it, certainly not from a 'mainstream' act anyway.
