It will be. Admiral started the replica shirt trend in 1975 with Leeds Utd but that was mainly aimed at kids it wasn't until 1977 that they marketed them to adults, which obviously  caught on very quickly through all the top teams

Too late for the games gone thread?

I'm sure a lot of people probably moaned about it as the commercialisation of football at the time 😁

No doubt

Probably also discussed on here before, what was the reaction to sponsors originally? I can't imagine that was positive

And the first sponsor was 82/83?? So 5 years between them going in sale and sponsors coming in

I hated shirt sponsors. I still do hate them. The sacred Aston Villa shirt should not be defiled with tacky advertising.

Originally you could choose not to have the sponsor on your villa shirt because I had one.

It didn't last long though, it soon became obligatory.

AKA the European Shirt because you weren't allowed sponsors in European competition to start with.

It’s the shirt (my own original) that I wore to Villa Park on Saturday. I’m curious as to how much the same shirt sold for on eBay? Not that I’m selling, simply curious.

I paid £155, about £40 more than I told my wife. I think it’s usually around £250 on classicfootballshirts.

I’ve got my dad’s original 81/82 away shirt, worn in Rotterdam. Great condition. Must be worth a bit? Not that I’m selling.

That’s amazing. I’ve been collecting old villa shirts off eBay for a couple of years now and I’m not sure I’ve seen an original 81/82 away shirt. The home one can fetch about £300.

Anyone know when the club first started selling replica kits? I've got photos of me and my brothers playing in the garden in a replica kit from I would say very late 70's.  I'm not aware they sold replica kits much before then?

Got me interested. Apparently Newcastle started the trend in 1974 for the cup final.

I've got a good selection of Villa shirts. Pretty much every one from late 80's to probably around the turn of the century (although I never had the shirt we wore in the 2000 Cup Final as they were sold out for ages beforehand - I ended up wearing the 92/93 one with the strings to that game)

All mine are well worn though. The 2x Muller Rice ones (94 coca cola cup year) are in terrible condition.

I also have an 1982 European Cup final away shirt. Got that from Oxfam in the late 80s! My Mom dragged me in there and I saw it on a rail. Think it was something stupid like 10p! Never wore it but keep it as a memento.

Yeah I went. I agree with you and @Milfner, it was okay but not great. I couldn’t work out a word he was saying whilst he was singing either. If I’m honest, I don’t think Alan Partridge really works live anyway, especially in a room that size.

Agree, I couldn't decipher what was being said in the singing bits either.

@Davkaus did you get tickets for the Notts one?

Sadly, no.  :(

Incidentally, I'm wondering how long it will take me to stop double-taking every time I see @sidcow's avatar.

It's a good question Mike.

This is one of those where I think the people who moan about what is essentially a bit of fun are waaaaaaay worse than the folks mentioning/taking part in it.
