The Concert/Gig Thread

So Jazz Sabbath last night was excellent. Adam Wakeman had greyed his hair to embody the persona of "Milton Keanes" and generally excellent. The ensemble were all excellent as well, including cameos from his dad.

What wasn't great was the where the Crescent Theatre is and the fact that N-Dubz were playing around the corner at the NIA/Utilia/whatever branding Arena. It took me 1.5 hours to get out of the car park...

I've now finished my gig going for the year :(

Looking over 2022 - its been a return to form and managed to see some cracking bands

  1.  Pavement - Camden Roundhouse. Absolute joyous 2 hours of Pavement songs. Only dampener was having Richard Dawson opening... Such as shame as the other London nights had The Bug Club, Los Bitchos or Beak opening - really shit out going on the Saturday night :(
  2. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Birmingham Institute. Stupidly went up front and in the middle and bounced around for the full 90 minutes. I should know better, nearing 50!!!! Brilliant live band.
  3. Warmduscher - Exeter Cavern. Great, packed venue to see one of the best current live bands out there. Live, they are heavier with shades of RATM meeting the Beastie Boys whilst listening to Funkadelic. Truly great experience in such a small venue
  4. Yard Act - Bristol Marble & Motion. Another superb gig and venue. Supported by Panic Shack who were ok too.
  5. Supergrass & The Libertines - Plymouth 1Big Summer. Took the kids with tickets to a day festival in Plymouth. Supergrass were typically epic live and The Libertines were very decent and all looked happy together for once!
  6. Courting - Plymouth Junction. Great up and coming band from Liverpool, have seen them a couple of times now.
  7. Feet - Plymouth Junction. Another newish band that (along with The Goa Express - see below) lean heavily on 'Britpop feelgood jangly guitar' songs. Nice lads too!
  8. The Goa Express - Plymouth Junction. Saw them support Shame last year and followed them since. Nice, easy going 90s feel to them.
  9. Sports Team - Camden Roundhouse. Very very good live but still cannot help having an irrational disliking for their frontman!
  10. The Bug Club - Totnes Barrel House. Awesome gig on Halloween. Bags of fun and they don't stop playing/moving!
  11. Baba Ali - Exeter Cavern. A little bit different to my usual gig but it was pretty good.

Next year I have Shame lined up in Bristol but other than that, nothing in the pipeline (yet!)

Just returned from Bill Ryder-Jones at District in Liverpool

Good gig, some old songs and some new material from the album out late spring next year

A bit of humour, this song was about a bad break-up that tore me apart but now it's about Richarlison

A full venue was still absolutely baltic (appropriate for where it is)

The guy is a real talent. That they had to put on the adverts Bill Ryder-Jones (The Coral) is a bit insulting really, he left the band 15 years ago and has a fine body of work in his own right. Noy only that but he's even produced one of the best albums of the year (Michael Head's latest)

Support was provided by Sweet Baboo another under the radar musician whose worked with Gryff Rhys, Cate Le Bon, H. HAwkline and Euros Childs. He had to leave the gig before BRJ played because he's due back in Cardiff to work on the next Euros Childs album

Thoroughly enjoyable night

Oh and best of all, no sodding encores

Brixton Academy: Security contractor dies after Asake concert crush

such a tragic event. from what it sounded like, a number of fans tried to force their way in without tickets. Asake even tweeted in advance of the gig not to turn up without tickets, so either this was expected or it's a 'thing' with his shows so security should've been much better prepared

James tickets booked for symphony hall  in may, pissing my pants with excitement.

that's the orchestra tour isn't it ?

Saw them perform it in Liverpool a few years back , managed to get in and see the sound check and quick hello with the band when I went

its different to the usual James gig , but really well put together , "The Lake"  with full orchestra is a real highlight

Yea it is , missed the last orchestra tour but know people who went and said it was very good. Saw them a few times, always great performances, helps that they have a crowd of fans who tend to give it their all as well.

First one of the year tomorrow, Trivium at the academy :)

First one for me isnt until 18 February - Dream Theater at the symphony hall. I have to say not particularly fussed as caught them the last time they were there and I was a tad bored by the end (it was a double set as well). However sister wanted to go and I needed an excuse for a Christmas present... at least they have a support act this time (never heard of them though, Arion?).

Do they do something with the seats or is it an all seater gig? That'd be bizarre to me for a metal gig even if it's prog!

I don't mind a bit of DT, but like you I think after a couple of hours I'd be willing it to end. Some good stuff in their catalogue but when they're busting out the 10+ minute tracks, nah thanks

All seated - it was a tad odd but seen them, Yes and Wardruna at Symphony Hall and generally it is a good show. At the end of the DT set I was VERY glad it was all seated...

Mind you, when Tool played NEC arena (or whatever its called now) in May they made that an all seater but they are Tool so generally do whatever they want.

Every few years I come to the o2 academy, remember it's a shit venue, and swear I'll never bother again

Nearly died there when the middle of the crowd collapsed during a Libertines gig. I say died...I genuinely feared for my life.

Saw the newly reformed Delgados at Academy 2 in Manchester last night. I was in effect the bag holder for my wife as they were up until the split one of her favourite bands.
They were excellent, as if they had never been away although Emma Pollocks voice has improved, they were as we last saw them. Rather negatively for me we got in well after midnight and a lot of their set was from the last 2 albums where I prefer the first 2. Finally zero people in the audience under 40 and that is being generous.

I have a gig this Friday. The Room. Liverpool 80s post-punk band have reformed. A band that really did not get the recognition they deserved, split in 1985. I was at the last gig and I'll be at the first back. Shortly after that last gig Dave Jackson and Becky Stringer formed Benny Profane, who I went on to work for, for a couple of years. Becky and Dave have been friends ever since, so this will be very much a gig and a social event but I'm really looking forward to it. New album due in April I think.

I don't think I have ever connected The Room to Benny Profane, partly because I thought Dave Jackson would have been too young. I was a little young myself to listen to them at the time, this was a favourite and the only response I have is of course its **** Dave Jackson.
