Great gig!

My friend’s video:

You must have been a couple of rows in front of us to the side. It was a great gig. It suited the intimacy of the venue. The drummer must have the patience of a saint to be able to play with just a snare drum, brushes and muted sticks.

Teleman at Gorilla in Manchester was tonight’s gig. And very good it was too

Wasn’t it just. When they get it right they’re exceptional. Basically if you get the chance to go and see teleman live, go and see teleman live, you won’t regret it.

Update:

Last Tuesday was The Psychedelic Porn Crumpets at the Shipping Forecast in Liverpool. No tickets, Sold Out but the happy coincidence of a friend running the gig for the promoter meant we got in. Loud gnarly riff-heavy surfer rock from Australia. I enjoyed it even if we couldn't really see the band playing

Yesterday: Gigantic, Old School Indie Festival at Manchester Academy 1.

Crazyhead - was in the pub, no interest

Jesus Jones: - saw approx 30 secs, it confirmed my belief they were shite all along

Juliana Hatfield Trio - the revelation of the day, I thought she and they were great. Apparently, their merch guy went AWOL so she sold the merch herself after their set

Jim Bob - nah, was never really a fan of Carter but Carter songs done accoustic are shitter than they originally were

The Bluetones - hands down the worst band of the day. If you took all the bad bits of Squeeze and Deacon Blue and formed a band, you'd have the Bluetones an utterly boring band. Intersong banter of "We're going to one in 6/4 time next" was rather apt. I didn't care, nor should I

The Wonderstuff: I'm not what you'd call a fan, though I reckon they must the band I've probably seen the most without ever owning any of their product. You have to hand it to Miles Hunt, he is a great showman and the band do deliver a performance. I enjoyed their set a lot.

Echo & the Bunnymen: I've always been a fan, I've lost count of the times I've seen them (It's well in excess of fifty, might be approaching a hundred by now). Thankfully they've abandoned the orchestral crap they were touring last year and gone back to what they do best being a proper band. It took Mac quite a while to warm to the occasion so the start of the set was rather lacklustre but these things aren't helped by no soundcheck (every band had to adapt to this) and at a proper Bunnymen gig full of fans of the band, the opener of Going Up would have hit the right note as it always used to be the set opener for many years but most of this crowd weren't hardcore Bunnymen fans so they didn't understand (Simple Stuff) the treat they were being given. This addedto the sound not being quite right at the start mean't Mac, who always plays off the crowd took a time to warm up. When he did they were good but they took a while to get there.

All Points East yesterday. Saw Parquet Courts, Marr, a bit of Courtney Barnett, Yak, Interpol and obviously the Strokes but the sound was so bad throughout. Great fun but the sound problems really did take away from it all.

Watched The Cult last night at Bearded Theory. A set bereft of crowd pleasers and mainly Sonic Temple.

Also watched Angelic Upstarts who I have seen before, enjoyed then and enjoyed now.

As for new music, saw The Sherlocks. Good, mainstream indie on the whole but a pleasant distraction.

Also watched Winachi Tribe, like a sober tighter Happy Mondays. Orphan Colours, Americana is the best description. Not bad.

Just back from that London, having spent the last two nights watching the peerless, indie rock gods, Guided By Voices. Oh. My. Christ. What a pair of gigs! My knees hurt, my feet hurt, my back hurts, and my wallet definitely hurts, but totally worth it. Now I'm left with the empty feeling of not being able to attend a third night of getting covered in beer and sweat.

Viva Uncle Bob! Viva GBV! The Club Is Open!

Milton Nascimento plays the Barbican tonight. Still a few tix. Was tempted.

He's playing 'Clube Da Esquina', a massive album in Brazil.

He's doing other non MPB bits and bobs too. He was in Som Imaginario, who had their Heavy Psych moments.

He's quite frail now. Performs seated and wobbles around the notes a bit - Total legend but don't think I want to see it :(
