Basing it on Porno.

There's a scene in that book involving Spud which I very much doubt will be in the film...

the one in the park with the young lady?

Yes, that's the one. Reading it made me a little bit queasy if i'm honest.

Having never read the book, I was about to Google it. Then it struck me, it's probably best not to Google the word "Porno" at work.

straight outta compton

its good, very strong performances, good mix of them and the world around them, theres a few name drops and appearances that feel forced, a fair bit of dr dre's end feels very forced and based on me watching 3/4 documentaries on them some of it feels skimmed over and a lot of it feels rushed, you could probably make a decent argument about it being aimed at heller too but i thought there was a bit of self depreciation in there seeing as ice cube, dr dre and eazy e's wife were producers, obviously helps if you like the music but that said my missus enjoyed it too

she enjoyed it so much i treated her to boyz n the hood! its a classic IMO was surprised by the missus who said she felt the entire film was on the brink of being a really violent film and is actually far less violent than anticipated, theres obviously a bit of gang land violence in there but the violence isnt the core of the film, its a brillaint film for it though, furious gets a bit too preachy, ice cube and a couple of the gang bangers dont always deliver great lines and the main story arc is a bit by the numbers but all of that adds to it

might try and get menace 2 society on to round off the week

I kind of feel like Straight Outta Compton is largely for people who were into all of that back in the day, and that most of it would go completely over my head.  I'd see a film without getting any of the significance or references etc.  Probably WNB as a result.

Yeah I'd say you need to understand the significance of what they did which the films touch on but there are documentaries that do it much better, I can imagine it being quite hard for yoof ratio grasp how low key sweary street rap was, like I said I think of the name dropping towards the end is an attempt to cover this and it doesn't do it particularly well

Then you need to understand at least a bit about the culture so films like boyz n the hood, menace 2 society, baby boy, Friday, training day etc all help and then a bit of the history so Rodney king, la riots etc that'll help too

All that said my missus knows a bit about them from what I play, a bit about dre, bit about tupac but that's about it, she knew nothing about ice cubes solo career of film career, the riots, Rodney king (!) I had to explain the bloods and crips to her after too, none of that spoilt it for her though, it's a film full of references and Easter eggs but the core of it is good enough for those not in the know to still enjoy it

Have watched nightcrawler and southpaw this week. really enjoyed both and think gylenhall has really turned into a great actor. Both completely different roles but he's fantastic in both.

All round performances in southpaw were great, typical storyline but the acting really makes it!

I (finally) watched Nightcrawler last night and thought it was very good. Gyllenhaal completely steals the show though. As you say, he really has become a very good actor indeed. It's the little things that make the difference. The 'natural' things he does in his behaviour. Looking forward to Southpaw now, more for the performances because, as you say, I'm told it's very formulaic and predictable.

He really seems to absorb himself in his roles, makes the world of difference!

I have no doubt that him and Ledger would have gone on to be the best two actors around. Gyllenhaal is becoming fantastic in everything he does and he has the abilit to carry off a blockbuster and the acting chops to pull of something like Nightcrawler. He also has quite a wide range of roles which is good to see.

I had absolutely no knowledge about the group - though I know about the political background of the era - but I watched it, enjoyed it, and don't really think any of it went over my head. The significance of it all is pretty well telegraphed.

Legend tonight

lets just say it's rather different from the Spandau Ballet version

without having really ever seen the real  Krays it's hard to know how well Hardy got the mannerisms etc but at times I felt his Ronnie was like Steve Coogan doing a  parody , but that aside I thought he played both roles well

Good film though , moved at a good pace , some humour at times and didn't romanticise them in the way the Kemp brothers film did ,  too much swearing though so don't take your nan to see it

good film though worth seeing

Legend and Everest for me in the next two weeks.

This.

I saw Hitman the other day. It's remarkable how bad that film looks. Theres CGI work that'd embarrass mid 90s TV. Everything appears to be cheap.

UUnsurprisingly shit.

for me it'll be legend, if i can find them then dope, 99 homes and cartel land, the martian is at the end of the month, october is sicario, the walk, spectre and im not sure when or how netflix are launching that idris elba african warlord film but that looks good

that johnny depp film (black mass) i'll check the reviews first, got a good premise and cast and if depp can do a donnie brasco-esque role then it should be good but theres just something about it casting a doubt in my mind
