it always has to be about him perfectly illustrated at the Euros wanting the glory of the last penalty!

If he toook 1st penalty people would have said he shirked responsibility though was no mention of Fabregas wanting last penalty at the time. Ronaldo gets way too much stick for me

Total bollocks maybe but he bottled the one in the Champions League Final against Chelsea for Man Utd and against Bayern in the Semi last year for Real! Maybe he wanted the last so he never had to take one and blame his team mates for defeat!!? Either way he is still a cock.

According to Graham Hunter who was speaking on talksport it is a mixture of wanting more money and the fact he never won the balon d'or. Apparently clubs lobby journalists/uefa delegates into voting and he does not think Real did enough for him to win it after the season he had!!? Iniesta won it by the way. There is a very telling picture of the awards ceremony where you can see the disgust on Ronaldos face!! As I have said before he is a self centred cock although a great player it always has to be about him perfectly illustrated at the Euros wanting the glory of the last penalty!

Iniesta hasn't won the Ballon D'or.

He won the "UEFA Best Player in Europe" award (which is arguably the same as the old Ballon D'or.

But the "FIFA Ballon D'Or" isn't awarded until January.

I really, really, really, really hope he doesn't win it. I reckon even his own team mates probably have a little giggle when he 'fails'.

Odds anyway, Messi is 1/2 ....Ronaldo and Iniesta are both 7/2 on Paddy power.

1] Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or in 2008

2] I see what you are saying, but I simply have to take exception that this UEFA "best player in Europe" award is the arguably same thing as the Ballon d'Or. While the criteria to win it might be the same as the Ballon d'Or once was, the new award it's just a cheap award which UEFA have concocted in order to attempt to turn the Champions League draw into a televised event which they can sell for advertising money.

The Ballon d'Or has (or had) a bit more of an illustrious history than that. It's a bit of a shame that FIFA have got a hold of the name now, but that's commercialism for you.

Yeah that last penalty thing is total bollocks.

If it HAD come down to the last penalty then people would have been praising him for dealing with the pressure of taking the last penalty.

Agreed.

I think there's more praise than criticism deserved for wanting to take the last penalty.

I dont think he feels like that at all. He lives in Madrid and is surrounded by Madrid fans who are only too eagar to tell him that he is the greatest player in the world. The bloke has 150 goals in 149 games for his club. He will have 100 caps for Portugal before his 28th birthday. He has won every major honour in the game at club level. He truly is one of the greats and I'm sure he is very happy with that.

There seems to be various trains of thought as to why he's "sad"

1. He wants a new contract but the club won't give it to him, meaning he doesn't feel "valued"

2. This European player of the year business. He doesn't feel the club supported him enough in "lobbying for votes"

3. It was the anniversary of his dad dying very recently. He allegedly wanted some time off for it and the club wouldn't give it to him, turning it from a personal issue into a professional issue.

If the story about him crying is true then I'd say the 3rd option is the most likely as that would be the only thing I'd say that could provoke that reaction rationally

Stevo, the 4th option is that he wants a payrise so as to cover the recent (or imminent?) tax hike in Spain, making it different from option 1 in that it's not a 'feeling valued' thing rather an 'I'm a bit poorer' thing.

But I do agree that if there were actual tears then surely option 3 is the only plausible trigger.

Why would they fan the flames? Nobody will give a **** in a few days time and the story will die.

True but there is no doubt in my mind that they (Journos) will ask him the question.. whether it's a few days or weeks later when they see him they'll ask him, they won't let this saga slip after a few days.. no chance.

It's how he responds to the question which will be the main interesting point imo.

But isn't there a key difference between British & Spanish journalists' relationships with clubs. English try to dig up dirt (Cole, Terry etc) whereas Spanish let stuff lie or bury stuff so as to curry future favour. It's a far more pally setup over there. So in that sense I'd doubt whether there's the appetite to get whatever it is out in the open, particularly if it's something that would embarrass Ronnie or Real in any way.
