The villa juggernaut keeps rolling on! I thought we had a hell of a lot of the ball and really should have done more with it at times. Watkins deserved at least one assist for the zaniolo chance and a goal, arguably 2 assists and a goal should have been the minimum today but he can’t haul every game I suppose.

 

Fantastic opportunity for us now to cement ourselves in the top 5, as newcastle dropped points yday and have arsenal next and Brighton messed up against Fulham whilst we have forest who, whilst tougher than luton, should still be a win for us. 
 

We controlled the game today but I think at times our movement needed to be better as we really could and should have put them to the sword today and used the chance to improve our GD

Just got home from the match.

Solid performance with some good quality at times, barely broke out of first gear and had we been more clinical would have scored at least 5. Thought McGinn was very good today, along with Konsa, Torres, Diaby and Digne. Special mention for Bailey too who just looks a different player now.

Jury very much out on Zaniolo, we were evidently better with him not on the pitch second half.

Thought the atmosphere was pretty good all things considered, seemed like the Holte made more effort to break into spontaneous song than I’ve witnessed the last few times I’ve been (first visit this season).

Only annoyance is the goal conceded, which sums up how good we are at the moment because if that’s all I’m getting annoyed at then things are really going well.

Indeed - especially on the rare occasion that the Luton players had the ball for more than 30 seconds, you could clearly hear the fans singing "We want our ball back"  🤣

Lucky for us we’re playing so well that Zaniolos poor form isn’t hampering us. Feels like there could be a good player there but he needs to do something soon.

Apart from that it was a routine win and we haven’t been able to say that in years.

Mate this is exactly what I thought of straight away i dont want him in the side again if im honest too much of a liability and im losing patience with zaniolo just not good enough, seen enough to know he doesn’t fit well with us hes too slow and makes silly decisions , wouldn’t lose sleep if we lost him to that betting scandal…

Mcginn was my MOTM today , happy for the win… couldn’t believe i was watching the Manchester derby hoping for city to drop points 😂 my club is in and amongst these teams can you believe…. I bloody love professor Emery and i love this club right now 🤝

I saw a couple of people say that they were disappointed that the atmosphere was a little flat, and at times it was good, but at others quiet, pretty much standard at the moment.

The thing is, it's easy to be excited when you're watching something akin to a boxing match or a school fight, with teams throwing haymakers at each other and seeing who comes out on top - this wasn't that - this was more like watching an operation, or an autopsy - we methodically, clinically, slowly took Luton apart - 80% possession - no shot from them until after an hour - it was as one sided a display as you could hope to see.

And we played some lovely stuff in amongst all that dominance - in different ways too - you can see this team thinking - you can see the manager's plans happening on the field - it's educational, it's cerebral - hold the ball in the back line and try it over the top to Diaby and Watkins, good, now their CB's are on the back foot.Try Diaby short, good, now they're tucking in to stop that, let's get the full backs high and wide, now they're overloaded - and all the time, the metronomic tick tock of Kamara and Douglas Luiz, Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa - tick tock, tick tock - we tried to tempt them onto us, then we passed it around them, it must be bewildering.

And you can add to that some weapons - Watkins, grafting and muscular, Diaby, zippy and sharp, Zaniolo, driving at the back four, McGinn, alert and accurate, Bailey tricky and alive - we play and play and play and then we have the tools to hurt you when we've moved you around.

For the first eighty minutes of that game, Luton weren't much more involved than I was.

At the end, perhaps a little European tiredness, perhaps a little lack of rhythm as the subs came on, perhaps a little boredom allowed Luton to have ten minutes where they competed and got their goal - but for the other eighty, we played with them like a cat with a ball of wool.

We scored three and missed a hatful - Watkins from Diaby's cross, Bailey screwing wide, Zaniolo's volley curling away from the post and McGinn flunking out from eight yards all come to mind - it could have been six.

We're good, very good - and we seem to be getting better. We play fantastic football and we score goals in heaps.

Last year we got to Europe. It took us 18 games to get to 22 points - this year we have 22 points in 10 games.

We lack a little depth and we might fade in the new year, but right now, this is as good a Villa side as I've seen in decades, and a different Villa than I've ever seen before - under O'Neill, we played underdog football - sit and hit, breakaway stuff, even under Gregory it was defend well and get it to the forwards early - this though, this is different, I've never seen a Villa team so dominant with the ball, so comfortable in games, so controlling - and i like it a lot.

It feels like it's sort of okay to be beating Luton 3-1 like we did today - don't sleep on it - this is special stuff - this is a fantastic period for the club - this team can do things that we haven't dreamed about in a long time.

Bring it on.
