Emery might love Torres but he loves winning more. Newcastle needs our most reliable defence  . Mings and Konsa are 3 and a half years into their partnership now with little competition. Theres been good and bad times with them but someone is going to have to be really really good to displace one or both from our starting 11. They compliment each other perfectly.

I think Torres will be colossal and Carlos was being courted by Pep before he signed Dias......but this first game, is too soon for me.

They will be great for us....but they need to grow in to the team.

However.....its UE's call.

We have new and returning-from-injury players, and we need to decide how to use our resources best on the Villa defense. There are some strong personalities, there are leadership issues, there are player-development issues, etc.etc.  It's confusing. Glass half-full version is we have amazing and interesting and versatile choices of defenders. Glass half-empty version is ... what a mess. We have a mish-mash of players with overlapping skills and yet big weak spots remain, too -- and we may need to recruit (eg, an RB). But time is running out. You've got to figure this all out for us and make it coherent. How do you line up only our back line now?

DE-FENSE

Go the no name defense of 1972!

I wonder if Pau could actually start at LB first match instead of Digne to combat Newcastle's height and set piece threat.

I certainly wouldn't break up the Mings, Konsa partnership though.

Not just yet, anyway.

They have to give us a reason to break it up.

I thought the same but then realised that the OP is from the US and this is the correct spelling there.

There are sometimes two ways to spell a word. The American way, or the correct way. ;)

Sorry! Fixed. I worked gainfully as a subeditor in Britain for a while and still slip up sometimes. 😉

Agreed. Torres will be ace and Carlos will be a cult hero. But they earn the shirt

We are very lucky that at the moment we have a chance to bed players in. Sign that we are really improving our squad quality.

He might start at left centre back like he did last game against Brentford. But I think it will be Dinge at LB with a back 4 rather than 3.

I have a feeling Torres won't need to earn anything and he'll come straight in, no matter what. His ability on the ball will be way too valuable for what Emery wants.

Konsa - Mings - Torres - Digne

Anyway;

Emi; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Moreno (when fit)

Torres and Carlos have to earn the shirt.

There will be plenty of games for everyone though, including Digne

Echo this. But to start the season I expect the back four that started the Brentford game.

Cash, Konsa, Mings, Torres.

I have a slight concern that the temptation will be to shoe-horn too many of our good centrebacks into defence at the expense of balance. But let's see how they handle it. For me, it should be round pegs in round holes for the start  at least. That means Digne at LB and Cash at RB. Standard 'In Unai We Trust' in case I almost upset someone.

Was it definitely a back 3 v Brentford or was Cash just playing the Moreno role? I know in possession it looked like a 3 but wasn't 100%

I'm never comfortable with the idea of CBs playing at either LB/RB. I'd much prefer players to just play in the positions they specialise in.

This said, my doctorate isn't in football like our glorious Basque leader, so I trust in whatever he feels is best.

In all seriousness though, I don't think there's going to be a set 'first 11' this season. It'll be an almost constant rotation, based on opponent and competition. Everyone will need to be prepared to play on any given match day. Add in another right back and we're in a real strong position, personale-wise.
