Popular Post Chindie Posted April 20, 2022 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted April 20, 2022 I watched it last night, finally. It's a very good movie. It's probably the closest they've come to what I would want as a perfect Batman movie. There's things I'd change, but it's damn close. Pattinson basically has to act the entire time with his eyes, and he's up to that task. His gaze carries more weight than you'd believe it should and he can portray different emotions with just a glance. He's not my ideal Batman, I prefer him to be a little more of a bruiser in build and Pattinson strikes me as more like the times Dick Grayson took the the cowl, but still, it's a good performance. Zoe Kravitz is probably in the running for best Catwoman. She moves and acts like Selina Kyle should, and fights like she should. And obviously it's helped by the fact she is an obscenely attractive woman. The film is very aware of it too, and they play with the idea that Bruce is attracted to her even when he knows he shouldn't. Only downside is the film doesn't have the time to deal with her actually being a criminal, she's a bit too quickly established as a bit of a sidekick. Dano is, as expected, good as this particular take on the Riddler, it's the kind of thing he does in his sleep. Farrell under a tonne of prosthetics is unrecognisable as Penguin and does a decent job a slightly over the top general in a criminal hierarchy. Jeffrey Wright similarly is a good Gordon. Tutturro is a very good take Falcone, less of the hackneyed Italian-American Godfather pastiche, more quietly sinister crimelord. The real standout is Gotham though. They have made the best version of the city on the screen. It's grimy, dark, Gothic, the rain never stops, the city broods. It's fantastic. Burton's version is integral to is tone but it's slightly to fantastical, the Schumacher stuff runs with that and makes it trashy neon tinged, Nolan toys with something closer to the comic in Begins and ditches it asap by TDK in favour of 'Gotham is just Chicago' and Snyder doesn't really do anything with it at all. What we get here nails that stylised, a step away from generic American city into something with personality. It's brilliant. Brilliant. And it's shot so well. I genuinely would happily have watched a couple of hours of Wayne riding his **** cool bike round the city with these great cinematic shots. It's nice to see them try to do more of Batman being a detective rather than just a guy that punches people. He started out as the world's greatest detective after all. Nolan made pathetic handwaves at it (taking prints off a fired bullet scene in TDK, for instance - **** awful scene) but this actually commits to it. For a while anyway. This arguably takes it to the more ridiculous extent where Batman is literally walking round crime scenes with cops, which will be a make or break moment for a lot of people I think (and the film even points at the elephant about 3 times). But it's good to see he's not brainless. The overall plot is fine, a mystery that leads to a Thing. I like the concept and the twists and turns, I'm less in love with some of the details, which we'll come to. But either way it's a good vehicle for it all to hang off, and it doesn't feel it's length. The score is great and the sound generally is bang on point. On the less positive side. I'm not that keen on a lot of the... tone, for want of a better way of putting it... of it all. Riddler being incel-y felt a bit on the nose, and the overt references to the Zodiac just pull me out of the experience, the number of people with prominent facial scars seems a bit like the film wanting to wallpaper grittiness into itself, Bruce is a bit too comically brooding in an emo-y way (he even says 'you're not my dad' early on) and the prominent use of Nirvana's Something in the Way is a bit too angsty... It has no subtlety and it's like it's trying to force weight, grittiness, darkness into it artificially. The worst example being the Joker, who they've decided to do in the grotesque style which looks... appalling. It's like it needs to prove its serious. I also don't really like the suit, however it's also evident that they're going for the idea that this is still Bruce learning to be Batman and this is a bit of a cobbled together suit. Although it's a bit odd to think he has the means to come up with contact lens that record and live stream but still run around with a stitched leather cowl. But you go with it, he's still learning (and he actually learns over the course of the film - he's a better fighter in the final scenes than he is the first, for instance). And I don't like Wayne's last resort tool at all. But that's really nit picking. It's a really good movie and it's in the running for best Batman film for me. 4

Chindie Posted April 20, 2022 VT Supporter Share Posted April 20, 2022 I typed that out on my phone in between moments of randomly falling asleep so I'm surprised it's even understandable.

Follyfoot Posted May 24, 2022 VT Supporter Share Posted May 24, 2022 Did anyone do the Riddler website flashed at the end and unlock the extra footage before Gotham PD ‘seized’ the site and shut it down?

heffoman
I think it had a few short riddles and the deleted scene with the Joker. Was there anything else.

sne
Great bit of marketing there. Fans will be demanding the 5 hours long Joss Whedon cut.

Jonesy7211
Shame this, I was looking forward to seeing Keaton don the cape again. Still the best big screen Batman for me, although Kevin Conroy rules all. Wonder if the reasons will ever fully come out in time?
