How does one become a set piece coach. Does he have a career bio somewhere?

Well this is akin to American sports, as mentioned in other threads. Think NFL where there are specialist coaches eg Special teams, Kickers, Punters etc. I guess that Austin has built some considerable experience here. It’s a very positive and forward thinking move by Deano IMO..

Hopefully it works out. I might be wrong but I can’t think of any situations where coaches at top level clubs have another job.

I do think Austin is a good addition all the same .

Surely a ‘set piece coach’ is not a full time roll is it? How much time in a typical week would he actually need with the squad?

Maybe not but it should be at Villa considering the abysmal set piece record we’ve had for as long as I can remember 🤔

I would expect him to study opposition and then we would prepare for those opposition in terms of attacking and defensive set pieces. So can easily see it as full time

The defensive side of things is key too. If Austin helps tighten things at the back too it all helps.

Absolutely. You can see so many little benefits, like where Konsa pretty much set a pick on a FK to get Buendia open out wide. I love how Dean is working in the margins to manufacture points.

Just shout repeatably put in the mixer, whilst simultaneously holding a pie and a mars bar.

Doing ball drying sessions with Matty Cash.

"This is how you dry a ball like a German"

"This is how you dry a ball using a hand towel"

"This is how you dry a ball with another ball"

and so on

We've definitely been shit at thrown ins for at least 20 years.

Until last Saturday, I cannot recall a remotely good throw in that led to a shot let alone a goal 🤔

This, if it’s worth 10 points this year from set pieces then he’s a shrewd move
