Do love commentary talking Ronaldo up the big un' every time he squats over a free kick only for him to hit the wall for 58th time in a row.

I assume De Bruyne is out of tournament way he went off? Think that's critical for Belgian hopes of winning this, think Italy could well edge them out if he's not fit and QF is on Friday so very little recovery time.

thought it was a dreadful dangerous tackle that has probably put him out of the tournament.  So yes without him and possibly Hazard too Italy should be favourites.

One of them Sky myths, I remember he scored one for United in about tye 500th attempt. Next week in Champions League Del Piero scored a free kick and Sky said he must have been studying Ronaldo 😂😂

No no no no nooooo! Not a chance. The whole of the ole skool Barcelona team were fit as butchers dogs, but didn't have the talent of Ronaldo, apart from Messi ofcourse, but then he is a different player. Ronaldo's a better all round player than Messi, but Messi at his best was probably the best player in the world.

Maybe a discussion for another thread, but definitely yes.

I've seen plenty of players that wasn't considered any where near GOAT, to have better general vision, technique and football brain than Ronaldo. But he is such a fantastic athlete that it makes him stand out.

It's his jumping ability, strength, pace, winning mentality that makes him stand out to me. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's part of the package. A footballer needs to cover both the footballing part and the athletic part, but Ronaldo excelled far more in the latter than the former.

Was good to hear Ian Wright call it out as well. Ronaldo obviously an incredible player and has scored some free kicks in his career, but just nowhere near a specialist.

We can take it up in their thread but I'm not sure I could actually disagree with this more!

All the stuff about iniesta and Xavi and messi having the best midfield behind him ever... You can make a good argument that messi is a better passer of a ball than both of them... Forget his goals he could have played Central midfield and be considered one of the best ever

Same with Roberto Carlos back in the day.

My overriding thought constantly - none of you highly paid words removed watch any league apart from PL.

Of course Southgate is going to play Foden and Mount…

Mounts not even trained with the team for the last week but he gets back in to the team just like that. So fed up of Southgate. Wasting this generation of English talent.

Putting our Jack fanboyism aside, Sako should at least be starting after his fine showing last week. Foden started two games and didn't really offer much. Looked like a rabbit in the headlights far as I could tell. He may come good of course but what's the point when we have Sako who will be full of confidence!

The same can be said of Jack really who has shown more than most so far this tournament. Would love to see him up against Germanys shaky defence but think it will be from the bench unfortunately. No surprises there but let's at least wait for the leaked team sheet before letting our piss boil too much!

Saka and Grealish should start, heck throw on Sancho and DCL, we’ve scrapped through, and played turgid football despite having a wealth of creative and attacking players throughout the squad, from back to front!

Even if I wasn’t a Villa fan I’d be demanding Jack started, he created the goal in the last game and been the brightest spark when he’s been on bar Saka in the last game.

Phillips and Rice have played more minutes then arguably the best English player we have. Like I said start of the tournament… could you ever imagine Portugal not selecting a fit Ronaldo?!

To be fair you could say kane is more comparible to Ronaldo, an on form kane is world class, contender for best striker at the tournament

And we have been picking him despite him not playing well

Grelaish then compare to Fernandes, who hasn't been starting and sterling to jota who hasn't been playing the best but is selected because he fits the shape that the manager wants to play

And that Portugal went out looking bang average last night... You might make a case that at a goal down they also threw on a glut of attacking talent and it didn't work, the subs struggled to make an impact

Possibly Eden Hazard as well. He might be out of form and not fully fit but he'd still be a loss.

Why he was playing two back to back 90 minutes I do not know after all his injuries issues the past 2 years . The amount of pressure Belgium were under and the fact the game turned into a basketball game I was waiting for him to pull something.

Martinez is a woeful manager. Hanging on for dear life with that amount of talent.

You look at the quality of players Portugal had coming off the bench compared to the ones Belgium had I'd argue Martinez has done a great job.

Dries Mertens the all time top scorer at Napoli ahead of Maradona and they brought on Carrasco who won the league this season. Arguably better options than set piece Bruno

Agreed. There's plenty of legitimate and arguably true arguments about how Ronaldo is better than messi. But being an all round better player is in now way true. IMO of course

Portugal left £100m Joao Felix and Bruno on the bench though. Grealish is nothing like Ronaldo, completely different players (and Ronaldo has 5 Balon d'Or fgs).

Looks like Southgate is going to play Sterling, Mount and Foden. I personally don't think Grealish did enough vs. Czech Republic to convince Southgate to play him CAM. He didn't press well and he looked leggy imo. Grealish is a LW at the top level. Yes, I think he should start ahead of Sterling, Jack's a fantastic LW - but on the other hand, that German channel is ripe to be exposed by real place. Mbappe tore them to shreds. Hummels and Ginter run in treacle and Kimmich is a great player, but also not the quickest.

Starting DCL over Kane is just a madness. So reactionary. Dread to think what DCL would have contributed with the service Kane has had so far.
