Why can’t everybody please think the same as @HanoiVillan as differing opinions are wearing him out.

People can have whatever opinion they want, but it makes no sense to be furious about trivia like who isn't going to make the bench as the last squad member, and also to think we have no chance whatsoever.

I'm sorry, but it doesn't.

Not specifically a response to you, but a general point -

If people believe this - that we will lose to the first decent team we come up against, it's written in the stars - then what's the point in getting annoyed over whether Ben White or James Ward-Prowse are taking the 26th spot in a 23-man squad?

What I would like is for people to *either* be outraged about squad additions and formations *or* be fatalistic about how we have no chance anyway, because it doesn't make sense to be both, and it makes this thread quite tiring to read to be honest.

We always have a chance. I think we have the best squad we've had for nearly 20 years.

I just have no faith in the manager. So yes it could all come together and we'll do well, and I'll be wearing my Grealish 7 England shirt and cheering us on as passionately as anyone else.

It's not written in the stars, it's just my gut feeling having watched England for 30 years

(and fwiw I don't really care who the last couple of squad places go to. They won't play anyway)

This feels a bit like we are going round in circles.

He wouldn't throw Ward-Prowse on. We know that for a fact, due to his omission from the squad.

So the argument that White won't play so he should take Ward-Prowse instead is utterly moot.

One might change a game IF used. One wouldn’t and is backup for the backup.

It’s on Gareth not to select a dead ball specialist when he has some of the best free kick winners in the game in his squad.

It’s moot of course as he decided he needs another defender, as cover for the injured defender hogging a spot.

Gareth has made a right mess of this squad imo.

Ben White is the second coming of Eric Dier he can play CB and CDM and we all know how much Gareth loved Dier.

But Ben White might be able to play two positions he is the master of none. I would argue he is the weakest CB at Brighton(Dunk and Webster are better) and his CDM skills are just of a ball playing CB playing there.

In the end he's been picked because of versatility and not because he's a good player just like Eric Dier was.

It’s just discussing the squad. I don’t think anyone is furious.

He's been picked for the future. After Stones - Maguire our quality at the back is pretty poor.

None of the other CB'S in the squad are close to starting regularly and don't deserve to be, at least White has a chance to be that player.

He ain't the future tho is he? Hardly a prodigy or highly rated.

He plays on the right of a back 3 so can cover the loss of TAA by effectively promoting someone like Reece James to the wing back role.

Like I said he's been picked because of his versatility of position and the fact Southgate is desperate to revert back to his back 3(5).

Im convinced Southgate will jump at the first sight of danger and go back to his ultra defensive 5-2-3 or 3-4-3.

So we've got no depth at striker or in CM but we've got a CB for the future

👍

FWIW I've not watched enough of white to know either way, I'm not judging him or commenting on him as a player, more the balance of the squad and the inclusion of injured players, if white was in there for maguire then I wouldn't care less, as it is he's cover for injured players because Southgate is a clearing in the woods and had to shoe horn in his favourite players

Same old England

England fans on BBC have voted the following line- up which I think is pretty much spot on (*Mings was next in line after Maguire)

Henderson, Walker, Maguire, Stones, Shaw, Rice, Mount, Foden, Sancho, Grealish, Kane

Whereas I expect Southgate will go...

Pickford, James, Walker, Stones, Mings, Chilwell, Henderson,  Mount, Sterling, Rashford, Kane

*Rice instead of Henderson if he's not fit enough.

Pretty much that is the team except I'd prolly play Trippier over Walker. Trippier for set pieces and Walker is a little sus from that diagonal ball.

Worked for Greece in 2004...

Greece were a big difference, they played defensively because they had a great defence

Southgate is going to find out the hard way playing defensively is not the answer to having a shit defence, which we definitley do

We have a great attack, play to our strengths

Anybody else excited to see if we are really shit how bad can we be?

Can we finish 3rd in the group?

Would that improve our world Cup chances compared to a bunch of 1-0's then losing comfortably to France or Portugal where Waistcoat keeps his job?

I don't see how he plays 4 at the back in these friendlies then goes 5 when the real stuff begins

I don't see why he's playing people in friendlies that won't be on the plane.

He will not play a 2 man centreback partnership without Maguire making the entire preparation pointless.

That is the team he will pick. I guarantee it.
Bloke is absolute mug.

I think the nation will be stunned if he doesn’t start Jack.

I’d love to see how Gareth tries to justify it.

I do

The European Cup final players were rested, we have a few players who are injured and then it meant that he could reduce the risk of kane getting an injury by giving Ollie 10 mins in a meaningless friendly

I think if he could have got away with it he wouldn't have played these 2 friendlies

Someone else said in the Spain thread they have the rona so might have to field their u21s in their last friendly, why not just scrap the game...

Dunno, I listened to Ian wright's podcast and they're all in on sancho

What was interesting at least was they said sterling and Rashford due to form would greatly benefit from being a supersub 1st game, that kind of springboard or platform to come on win the game and then go off on one for the rest of the tournament, poor form could go out of the window in a 20 minute sub performance

England have several contenders for that role

If we came third (and get through) we'd play the winner of B, C, or E, so likely 1 if Belgium, Netherlands, or Spain 😬
